I am in version 7, and have a form with an embedded browse that lists 2900 records. I have a field <number> that I can use to list record order 1-2900 depending on sort by state, city or name (once the sort is completed, I then number 1-2900). I used the operation procedure (Update genie) and then made it an xbasic expression for each of my sort buttons. This works fine.
I now am selecting a portion of the 2900 records (One state with 40 cities) and again want to use the <number> field to list 1-40 in alpha order by city. I go back to the update genie follow the steps. I fill in my field (number), my beginning number(1) and my step (1) and then I do the sort order. When I get to the record selection to update, I go to the second radio button that says, "Current selection of records". The Genie, however, selects all 2900 records and updates that list, not my 40 records within the overall list.
In my old database program the ability to sequence records was simple. You go to the field you want to update, and use a formula {Sequence (1,1)} and that was it. Is there something as simple with Alpha, as I would like my browse lists to have sequential numbers for records listed. I have tried some of the suggestions made by others, but it always seems to come back to the updating is done for the entire list. I am using a multi-state button to select each state, so I have also tried using a variable for the state I am choosing. No luck.
Happy Thanksgiving. I ended up forgetting to make the stuffing, thinking how to solve this problem, but the turkey was excellent....:)
