Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

WAS Demo App Home Page Won't Load

On my development system I'm running Win XP Pro (SP1), an AMD 1.1 Athlon 1.1GHz CPU, 512Mb RAM; A5V7 Full Version (build 3880_3005), A5V6 Full Version (build 1600_2057) & Firefox as my default browser.

On my laptop I'm running Win XP Pro (SP1), a Pentium 4 3.2GHz CPU, 1GB Ram; A5V7 Full Version (build 3880_3005), A5V6 Full Version (build 1603_2057) & Firefox as my default browser.

I haven't had a need to do anything with the WAS, so I've pretty much left that side of Alpha alone and concentrated on the desktop side of things. Now, I want to work on some web content and that's where my (current) problems are starting.

On the development system, when I start the WAS Demo, Step 3 of the WAS sample (Launch the Home Page of the Sample Application) does nothing. Files have been published and the Web Server has been started. The button depresses but that's it - nothing else happens. The browser is already open, but does not get focus, nor does the home page load.

On the laptop, the browser DOES get focus, but the Home Page of the Sample Application doesn't open - the browser displays 'Failure to Connect to Web Server' and seems to time out.

Short of reformatting, reinstalling, buying new computers, etc., I'm open to any suggestions as to how to get the WAS to work on either (preferably both) of my systems.

If you have personal firewall software (or XP SP2, which you don't but I want to mention for completeness), you will need to authorize Alpha Five to use the port specified in the Web App Server Control Panel. The port defaults to 80.

I'm not an expert in Alpha but I would check the following.

Step #1) Should have created a directory c:\a5\webroot\web_application_demo\default and there should be several *.a5w and *.a5wcmp files in it.

Step #2) Simply starts the Web Application Server (WAS). It must be running without anything else conflicting on its port address or it will not work.

I would make sure the WEB APPLICATION SERVER is running (Shows a green dot). Or you can do the same thing clicking on WAS below the Alpha Menu.

On the Alpha Menu select WEB and then select web application server and it should take you to the WAS control panel. Make sure Server Port is 80 (Thats the standard HTTP web port). And its important that NOTHING ELSE is using this same port # or the WAS server will conflict with it. Like Windows IIS server if its running will use port 80. You May have to use a different port or shutdown IIS.

There are several tools available on the internet to see which applications are using which ports. Alpha5 should be using port 80 if its loaded without conflicts.

Step #3) Should launch you browser and the URL that it should be accesses is: http://localhost/Web_Applications_De...t/MainMenu.a5w You can type this same URL in the browser.

If step #3 doesn't work an easy way to see if the WAS server is running on port 80 would be to go to the command prompt START/RUN/CMD <enter> or START/RUN/COMMAND <enter> (if your using Win98) and type: TELNET localhost 80 <enter>. When the blank screen appears hit enter a few times. You should get a 505 HTTP Version not supported error and something that will show whats using port 80 like Server: Alpha Five/7.0 etc. If this doesn't show then your problem is with Step #2 not Step #3

(Sorry Lenny I didn't mean to over write your suggestions, I was typing my big response while you responded to this thread)

          Lenny & Jerry,

The WAS CP is set to port 80. Following Jerry's suggestion, I got (among other items) "<ADDRESS>Alpha Five/V7.0 Build/3880-3005 at DAVEJAMP Port 80</ADDRESS>" about 5 lines of asterisks (*) and then a line reading "telnet localhost 80". Doesn't this say that Alpha has access to port 80?

Yes, that indicates that the server is properly running on port 80. What happens whern you try step #3?

By the way Jerry, the instructions you provided above are great.

              Lenny,

Step 3 works - the Demo Login page opens as it should.
