Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    superscript-subscript help

I have an engineering app, with a custom toolbar that is used in certain forms, see attached picture.

But I need to add to it both subscripts and superscripts for square and cube

    like 25(and a little 2 or 3 below the 5) - subscript
    like 25(and a little 2 or 3 above the 5) - superscript

but for the life of me, I cannot find characters that I can use for these. Has anyone else had this need, and maybe know a font that has those characters, and the chr() number?

    a. ran a chr(i) code with i running from 1 to 298
    b. generated a dbf file that contains output (zipped-else its not accepted by the msgboard)
    c. converted into pdf

here are the two files - some of the special characters you need are available through chr(i) with appropriate i value.

There is also a special characters list from Code -> Code Library. i havnt figured how to use it. But maybe someone has. :(

    cheers

      Thank's. I did the same from 0 to 500 and from 0 to -500.
And I have viewed in many fonts in a saved browse.
The superscripts are there, but alas, the subscripts are not.
I also searched online, but could find nothing. Some programs for architects let you make characters, but I can't find anything for regular fonts.

Aren't subscript characters a function of the font you are using? If so, maybe you need to find a different font to display.

          Thanks, Ed.
I tried at least a dozen fonts, including MS Unicode. Some defintely have more special characters than others - however, as nearly as I can tell, to get subscripts like the square and cube you have to either use a word processor or be in a language that supporst it. At this point, I don't think there are any fonts with subscripts.

Have you tried contacting any of the font vendors?

I sent a query to a Microsoft tech. See if I get any ideas back. So far, any fonts I can find with subscript characters are intended to be used from within certain programs.

                Martin,
Did you ever get an answer?
I need to display 10 to power -4, that is, 10 with a superscript -4. With Windows CharMap I can see a superscript 2 and 3 but no 4. Also the "-" is not very good.

                  Re: superscript-subscript help

No - I talked to IBM and Microsoft, and once thought I had something going, but didn't.

The issue, of course, is finding a font that has the needed characters.

                    Re: superscript-subscript help

                    Martin,

I know this isn't exactly proper, but what about playing with the font and position?

Is the Superscript/subscript a separate field in the table?, or is it part of another field?

I was playing with one of my tables and built a little report to test with.

                    This result is attached.

Basically what I did was to take our user-id field, break it up into 2 calc fields, then offset the second field by about half the height up or down. I alligned the first calc field to the right and center in the field on the report, I changed the font of the 2nd calc field to a 7 point and aligned it to the left and either to the top or bottom depending on what way I want it to be.

Not exactly scientific, but it did produce the desired results.

                    Tom

Quite nice results I must say. Take a bow.
                      There can be only one.

                        Re: superscript-subscript help

Thanks Tom. I'll fiddle with it, too.

My engineering client has fields that could contain a mixture of sub and super scripts - I currently have a temporary floating toolbar that pops when they arrive at the field so they can current;y select from "valid/legal" characters available form the font for that field.

It would be tricky, but I could have several 1 character fields and a conditional object, and use your technique depending on their selection.

I haven't so far, using arial unicode font, been able to get anything to work - see if you can get the alt + 'whatever' to work.
