Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Who have compared AlphaFive to WinDev ? O/T

    Hello,
I want to change my develop tool (Magic) to another tool. I have tried some time WinDev and AlphaFive V5, but to compare these two tools you had to go deeper and that costs a lot of time, so I am wondering if somebody at this forum can give the pros (and cons, maybe) of AlphaFive in comparing with WinDev?

    TIA,
    Teun van Unen,

I don't know anything about WinDev. But I'll bet you a steak & lobster dinner that I can do anything in Alpha Five significantly faster than someone who is an accomplished WinDev user. And nope, I still don't need to know anything about WinDev.

Payment of my dinner can be made at the Alpha Five users' conference next year.

By pressing the "Search" button above and typing in "windev", I found 16 threads. Maybe one of them will give you some insight.

          Hi Tia,

I just found this thread. I was also a Magic develpoer (I run my business with Magic 5.02 still in dos) & because of pricing issues have started to look around for another solution. Have you made the tranformation to Alpha 5. What are your thoughts on the differences?

            Magic-WinDev-A5

Hello Barry (my name is not TIA! You donb't know what this means? Thanks In Advance),

The last year I have first tried WinDev : it's a beautiful tool, but there are some cons. We (as 'old' magicians) are spoiled with the RAD-possibilities and that's my cruel point for WinDev, at this moment I don't know how A5 behavior is.
My current cons , to A5 are :
            - a not professional looking data-dictionary
            - not so good looking user-window presentation styles
My current pros to A5 :
            - easy to learn because of Beginner All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code
            - a lot of build-in features
More I can't say at this moment,

Best wishes for 2006 and kind regards,
            Teun van Unen,

              Teun,

Thanks for the response, sorry for the name mixup. I have decided to purchase Alpha 5. I hope I can learn it well enough to rewrite my Magic application in it. I will really miss Magic though, I don't think there is anything like it out there.

                Magic 5.02 dos <=> A5

                Hello Barry,

                Still another thought.
When you come from Magic 5.02 Dos I think A5 is a very good and cheap choice, but when you come from Magic 8.3 (like I do) and higher I don't know if A5 meet your needs.
I wish you good luck with the re-develop and I hope you'll write your experience.

                Regards,
                Teun.

I've seen some pretty good looking user windows develped by persons more creative than I am. There was a link around here that had a bunch of posts of very impressive windows. Hopefully someone will supply the link.

                      Hi Teun,
I have been using Alpha V6 and V7. It is easy to learn. I develop apps for truckers. Quite advanced...in my opinion. I also use Filemaker Advanced. The reason is, although Alpha is quite good, Filemaker has some easier features and provides a runtime solution that is easier for me to secure and package for sales. I stay with both because they both have what I require, but a major issue with me has been the importing of data. It has been a bit of a nightmare trying to do it with Alpha and with Filemaker it is a simple click of a button (already coded into Filemaker) with search capabilities to find the file to import. Export....Not a problem at all, but they forgot to add an import to work just as easy. See image.

                        Hi Kevin,

I am not a user of FMA, but the import with Alpha could not be much easier than it is at the moment. There is the manual method, see attachment. And there is the Operations method that can be built and run in a script or from a button. See attachment Import 2.

                        Try it and see.

                          thanks

I thank you all for your input. With this information I'll going to test Alpha5 further and check if it fulfills all my (programming) needs.

Thanks again, kind regards and keep well,

                            Hi Keith,
I have been round and round on this. The import is a fine tool if you are NOT using a runtime. In my apps I sell, the runtime does not allow one to import as easy as they export. Unless a "specific" script for the operation is made and then the end user cannot pick the file from the harddrive, but is required to have pre-ordained locations, import card made up in advance of the distribution, and specifically named. On top of this, my apps have a minimum of 27 different forms/reports, hundreds of fields and i cannot take the time to build import scripts for each and every form. That would also require me to demand of my end user to follow "exact" location and specifications for just doing a simple import of customers from time to time. FMA has a simple export with the options allowed to be determined by the end user, and a simple "one click button" for the importing of any data with the end user determining the parameters. Everyone says it is simple in Alpha. Well i am sorry, I found a flaw. It is not so simple, especially if you saw my app, but in FMA, a child could import and export. I love Alpha, don't get me wrong, but this issue has caused me problems to no end and everyone has been great in helping with this, but the long and the short is I cannot create a script to import for every form and situation with iron clad parameters. I just can't do it. So I am left with using Alpha for my current app, and moving on to FMA for my next one.

I once was Magic user. I started with version 1.0, when there was only tech support person, and continued upgrading until 5.0. It was a pretty sweet model, especially back in the DOS days. 3.5 was the best!

But the runtime fees were insane AND, with upgrades costing thousands of dollars, eventually I just switched to Visual Basic. One of the things that originally drew me to Alpha Fives, was how much it reminded me of Magic!

Anyway... I hear there are quite a few old time Magic developers in this thread. I have a question. In Magic, you had the Range and Locate parameters. The Range was the range of records displayed. The Locate was where in that view to place the highlight bar.

How does Alpha Five do this? I'm still confused about this.

I think with A5 it's more of a two step procedure. First step is running a Query which sets the range of the view. Then in order to move to a specific record within that view, without disrupting the Query, what do you do?

For instance lets say my database index is State+Last_Name, for instance: AZJones. The Query is nice in that it restricts the view to only Arizona, but then how do I search within that view?
