Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

importing individual data from different databases

Can anyone tell me if I can import data from an access datatbase to a table alread in existence in my A5V7, and if so where I can find the information on how to do so. Thanks

    phillip:

use the import feature under File in main tool bar. Third selection is for ADO import genie.

you will import the Access file into a new dbf. Then append the data to the file you want to load.

    I hope this helps.

I have tried to do this but decimal places are cropped from numbers with decimal places in the original Access table. I have edited the resultant table in table structure. I set the number fields to 18 width 2 decimal and when I try an import into it it sets them back to 20 width and 0 decimal.

this sounds like a bug. I believe there had been a similar problem with Excel in the past.

Send a bug report to Alpha. They may need a sample data file to test with.

          i hope this helps.

            Mr Adler

I have attempted what you have suggested by appending the record, but what it did was replace an existing date with the appended date. What I want to be able to do is go to a table that I have imported and add a specific data field to an existing table. In this instance what I'm trying to do is take an employee's training date from 2004 in one table and add the training date reported for 2005 into the table for training dates of 2004 for all of the employees.

The append operation should add records. new records do not replace existing data. It sounds like you want to post the old records.

the new file must match the old on some key field(unique) then replace the date field with the new value. Posting will permit you to replace, add, or subtract from a field.

if you are doing an append and then want to assign a particular value to a field perform an update against the file changing the fields in question.

              I hope this helps.

                importing individual data fields

                Mr. Adler

Being a newbie with this program and with programming in general I must be missing something or doing something wrong. I continually try to use the append function to import 2004 dates into a table that already has a 2005 date field and cannot, I have even edited the tables so that each table has the same number, type, and names of data fields in hopes that the data will import and as of yet it has not. Are there any availabe examples of how to perform what I want to do other than what is provided in the help file for A5V7?

OK - you have two tables. One with 2004 data and one with 2005 data?

And the fieldnames, types, and sizes are the same?

When you define the append, make sure that the Append drop-down is set to "all." It should not be set to "Unqiue Only" or "Unqiue Replace Existing."

When the operation is complete, make sure you haven't filtered out the records. (Click the Show All button on the toolbar.)

                    Retrieving data from seperate tables

                    Mr. McCormick

Your information along with the information received from Mr. Adler in a prior post has helped, thanks. What I found was the the entire table consisting of first name, last name, MI, and training date had been indeed added to the Master table, I just didn't scroll down the table before to see it had been added. What I'm trying to do is this. table 1 has the following fields: Last Name, First Name, MI, and Qualify date, table 2 has the same fields as table 1 with the exception of the fact that the dates in the qualify field are different in table 2. What I would like to do is add the field name "date qualified-05" and the data in the field from table 1 to table 2 which currently has a field name "date qualified date-04" and let A5V7 make sure the data is attached to the correct name as well, can this be done?
