Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Port 80 is already in use

We just received our web application license. I have downloaded and installed it. When trying to start the web application server, I get the error message that reads,

"The server cannot be started. Port 80 is already in use. Make sure no other server software is configured to use this port and try again."

I have checked my email accounts and all of them are using incoming port 110, and outgoing port 25.

    Any suggestions?

Did you try the search feature of the board?
    There can be only one.

Also, in the future please do not cross-post the same question to both Web App Server v7 and Alpha Five v7

            Sorry Lenny,

I didn't realize that I did that. I have been having some difficulties with my internet connection, and I didn't think that the first one posted.

I didn't mean to... my apologies.

Port 80 is often in use on a server. Windows IIS uses 80, and Small Business server and Exchange both requires it, as well as any personal web server.

Its easy to switch to port 81 (for example) in the WAS configuration. Then your URL needs to have a ":81" at the end of what would be your normal URL to the Alpha server.

                Thanks Steve,

I switched to Port 81, and it worked like a charm, and I was finally able to successful publish the A5W page I created.

I assume that all five of our computers (we are using the online version) need to change their port to 81 in order to access the information as well. Is that assumption correct?

Yes, its whatevertheytypenow, followed by :81. Note that what you type is different from 'outside' your firewall and inside. For example, I type http://support.attorneystrust.com:81 (you can try this to see the demo), and internally I type //myservername:81.

                    Thanks Steve.

As we are new to the Alpha product and are not IT professionals, we are struggling somewhat in deploying Alpha effectively.

Are you perhaps available today via email or even a phone call or two to help me "button up" the completion of our Alpha deployment? (I am working on a deadline that is fast approaching and I have discovered in the last few weeks that the information available to us to assist in this process is too technical and Alpha's customer service is rarely available to us.

If so, we would consider it an early Christmas present from you and would love to treat you to dinner and a round of golf when you come to Houston.

Please let us know what your schedule is today.

                    Warmly,

                    Kimberly

It's far better if you post your questions here so everyone can read/chime in, but my email address is in my signature line if you want to email privately. I am working straight through to Christmas, so I can answer from my desk if you do email.

Thank you Steve for your kind response.

To date, we have successfully imported our data and now have a working Alpha Five database.

We have also successfully created forms and published them via the webserver.

The next two most critical issues are these:

                        1. How do each of our five computers (the developer's computer plus 4 others) access those files? (I assume there is some directory available via the server, however at this time we cannot confirm that, we do not kniow how to upload those files, and via the web server control panel, I assume we need to log our server IP addresses to enable access.)

                        2. We need to know how our database is populated via forms that are filled out by clients on our website. Is there mapping involved? What functionality needs to be triggered for those fields of information to populate the database?

Thanks for help on this in advance, Steve, or whomever might be available to assist us. These two issues are critical at this time. A step by step primer would be helpful.

Before I attempt to answer, can you clarify:

When you say you've successfully created forms, do you mean in the Web Projects control panel, as in Web Components and A5W pages? That is, have you built an Alpha Web Project? Your question 2 leads me to believe you have not built a web application, otherwise you'd know the answer to #2.

Do your five users want to connect to your web project, from a browser? Or do they want to connect to an Alpha desktop application (not in the browser)?

Did you purchase an Alpha Five Web Server License (separate and lists for $699)?

                            Steve,

Yes, we have successfully created web project (an A5W page) in the web Projects control panel and have published them at least to the point that they render via a browser.

Candidly, however we don't know if "publishing" means that the file has been saved on the server available via a directory or not. That is part of our confusion.

All users connect to our web project via a browser. We have an Alpha Five Web Server license.

                            Your thoughts?

Sorry I had to ask, you'd be suprised.

I'll pretend you have not installed anything on your server yet....

Move your Alpha database from your workstation to the server. Put this under any folder where LAN users have read/write access. Test this by opening the database (which is now on your server) from a workstation. Actually only the database files need to be on the server, but I've not studied how to split an Alpha db in that fashion.

To publish on your server, identify it by name or IP address. Install Alpha WAS on that server. Make sure you get the latest update, since there was a recent important one. Start the server by launching Alpha. Go to the control panel and set the port to 81, and perform any licensing you need to with Alpha under Sessions tab.

Start the Alpha WAS. Test by going to any workstation and entering in your server path, //myserver:81, or //xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:81 (that's from memory, may be slightly different). You should get, even without publishing your project, a screen that has "Alpha Five" on it somewhere even if its an error message; you just want to confirm it is running.

--- opps, I have to run and can get back to this in a few hours. Do the above, then look at Alpha's great help on publishing files to the server. I'll be back in a few hours.
