Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Migrating Alpha from web to local

I am wanting to migrate an alpha 5 database currently hosted with Alpha 5 online to a local machine.
I have purchased a single user version of Alpha 5 V7 and FTP'd the database files to my PC. They reside in a folder called 'data'.

When attempting to open the database I access individual tables of information but not as it appears online.

Here is what I have been doing:
via the Database/Task tab > choosing More Databases > going to the sub-directory that has the dbf file > changing the 'Files of Type' window from Database (*.adb) to Table (*.dbf)

I would appreciate any help you may be able to offer with this!

    Thanks,

    Achamp

I don't think I understand what you're doing or what your question is.

Also, I hope the administrator moves this to a different section. It does not belong here. Should have been posted in the A5v7 section, I think.

      more info

I have FTP'd the entire folder of files associated with my Alpha 5 database to my desktop. The folder contains many file types (.bdf, .sex, .cdx etc.)
My question is, how do I go about opening & running these files as a local database on my PC?
I have purchased Alpha 5 V7 for this purpose.

Any assistance would be greatfully received!

A database that was developed for the web isn't directly portable to the desktop. The data will all be there, of course, but the functionality that is built for the web doesn't apply unless you're running the system through a web browser.

That said, I think we all need some more direction as to what you really want. Do you want to just run this as a local web-based application? If so you're ready to go. Get started by opening the Web Project Control Panel and then publishing everything to the Local Webroot.

If you want to run this as a desktop operation, i.e. not through the Web Application, you'll need to look in the A5 Control Panel for the things you need. Are there any objects in the Forms tab? If so, look for, maybe, a Main Menu to get started.

My guess is that if someone developed this as a web app, you won't find the tools to run it as a desktop app, and you or someone will need to build those pieces to get what you want.

Hope this helps, but I'll also bet you have more questions. Ask away...

Hi Steve and thanks for your wisdom. I shall try running this through a browser locally and see if this meets my requirements.

Sorry it has taken me so long to read your reply, Christmas holidays!

          Thanks again!
