Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Masking Alpha5

    Hi
I'm new to Aplha5V7 and I read somewhere you could mask Alpha5 and put your own name for selling your application on to others. Can anyone tell me how to do this please
    Thanks
    Ray

I think there's a lot of info on this subject if you'll use the Search feature of this board. Some thoughtful use of keywords will probably turn up more than you need.

      "Masking" Alpha 5

      Ray:

Use the Run-time of Alpha to distribute your application to your users. This will prevent them from modifying your code. Create custom dialog boxes throughout your application. For example, if you have a delete operation that you created with Action Script, modify the XBasic code to create your own delete warning dialog box, rather than the default alpha deletion warning...

      Is this helpful?

While inside your db, take a look at 'Tools', 'Create Shortcut'

You can mask almost everything. In the help file do a search on, "create install package". Pay particular attention to the "see also" link at the bottom of the page, How to Distribute a Runtime Application. There you'll see how to use your own, Title, Splash screen, Icon, and Help parameters.

That's a good point that Rich made. Even after you've branded your application as instructed in the help file, a lot of little warning and error messages will still say Alpha Five.

BUT... trying to capture and replace all those little events takes a LOT of extra time. For what? Nothing much if you ask me. Personally, I don't care if a warning or error message says Alpha Five. It doesn't make me look bad. If a client or customer asks what's Alpha Five, just say, "That's the language that was used to develop the application." No big deal.

            masking Alpha 5

I agree Neil. Depending on the environment in which you deploy your application, having various warning dialogs say "alpha 5" may be a non-issue.

I have some clients that get excited about seeing their company name appear everywhere in the app, such as a deletion warning dialog saying "Acme Inventory - Are you sure you want to delete Widget 123 from inventory?"... (instead of "Alpha 5 - Are you sure you want to delete this record?" )

it is psychological, makes them feel that the customization of their app runs very deep, in a way that they can see...

but using the run-time, and the "create shortcut" options will take you 95% of the way towards your goal... at that may be all you need...
