Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A5W "Contact us" page info populating a database table

We have successfully created a A5W page with text and have inserted a grid component. This page will be used on our website for clients to sign up for our newletter, etc. They will be typing in their contact information, i.e., name, address, email address, etc. We now want this information to populate a table that I have created for this purpose in our database.

I successfully created a A5W page, published it, typed in sample information and hit the submit button. Sure enough, this information showed up in the proper fields in our table.

Here is the problem. Now that the table contains this information, each time we access the table - to edit and then publish again, the information that I typed in previously now shows up in the table that should be blank, and ready for clients to fill in their own information.

I know there must be an easy fix to this, but I haven't been successful in finding the right information. Can anyone assist?

    Thank you.

    Hi Kimberly,

If I understand everything correctly, I believe you want an empty form to show so the new clients can enter their information and hit submit.

The best way to handle this is with a dialog form. I have one where visitors can register their visit at http://was.dbdbi.com/Login.a5w. The login is guest and the password is guest. I also have a demo of how to create a dialog component at www.danblankdatabases.com.

    Hope this helps.

      Hi Kimberly,

Dan is correct, you could use a dialog component, but since you already have your form laid out in a grid, it seems like the easiest way to make it the way you want it to change the Properties Section to "ADD RECORDS ONLY."
Once the user hits the submit button, the data is gone, and a new blank page appears. This way, the users will not be able to see data from the previous entries.

You on the other hand, can create an duplicate page (with a slight variation in the address name), which does not have the "Add Records Only" restriction, so you can view the data yourself, without having to go to the desktop application, should you have a need to do that.

I hope both of our suggestions help.

        Thank you both very much!

I had originally created our A5W pages with a dialog component, rather than a grid component. However, after talking with John at Alpha yesterday, he informed me that if I wanted to use the A5W page on our website, and wanted it to populate a table, the A5W page with the dialog box would require us to write additional XBasic. He suggested that I use grid components, as the populating of tables would be more automatic. (If you have another suggestion, please let me know!)

I have discovered that our data does populate the table when the dialog component is used, so I guess I'm making progress there. If you know of a way to use the dialog component without having to write additional code, I'm all ears. The dialog component, as far as I can tell, has more flexibility in the creation of forms - I noticed the difference when I tried to create a "memo" field.

Rich, I have tried to locate a "ADD RECORDS ONLY" button in the properties Section, but cannot find it. That is exactly what I need! What am I missing? I am in the Web Projects Control Panel - Web components (editing) - Component Type - Grid - Properties. I have looked it over several times and cannot find the magic button! I'm running A5v7.

Thanks guys for helping me through this!

          Add Records Only

          Hi Kimberly,

Rich's idea is a good one. One I had forgotten about. Any way here is a picture of the "add records only" feature. Just change the focus from False to True.

          Hope this helps.

Boy, do I feel like an idiot. Sometimes I think you can be too close to a project, you miss the obvious!

Thanks - it works like a charm.
