Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Multiple data sets, one application

I am part way through writing a small application. I need the user to be able to save the data set, then open the same application with blank fields, then save as a different data set, perhaps several times. The idea is to make it a foolproof standalone program suitable for anyone, with runtime of course.

Does anyone have any guidance on this please?

The only way that I can think of, to start with, is putting say five copies of the blank tables, forms etc. in different directories, maybe with a set populated with dummy records as well.

There must be a better way!

Robin, tell us more about the app, especially why there's a need for separate databases for one user.

        Sure, Tom.

My application is in genealogy, family history, where it is necessary to have separate data sets for different individuals. Even husband and wife need their own data sets.

Another is when an accountant needs record systems for different clients. True, they can all be combined in one big system, but that doesn't make things easier.

I'm sure there are other examples.

        Cheers

Robin, can't the complexities of maintaining multiple independent copies of the same application be eliminated by designing your tables to include a family identifier field in each... ? You'd keep the data for all families in each table, but each record would have the family identifier field so you could easily filter records to display only those for a given family. Wouldn't something like this work?

Tom, there are already many many families represented in the tables.
My application deals with raw census data for various years and tries to put it into several sorts of understandable order.

If I had to incorporate a field for "which family" things would I think get out
of hand! People change from "family" to "family" every census time.

I could I suppose put a neutral set identifier on each record but it adds another dimension to any searches.

For the moment I am concentrating on getting the single database "perfected": I'll get back when I've done that!

Thanks for your advice and a Happy New Year.
