Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Method to rank records?

    Can anyone help me with a suggestion for a problem I'm having...
    I have a table of records that I need to filter on a date, and then rank according to the value in a calculated field. I need to assign 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th places etc, according to the value of this field. However, I need a method that will make adjustments for ties - ie two items in joint 2nd place, so next record = 4th place, etc. I also need the value returned to be a stored value so it can be exported.

    I've tried a set of scripts and variables, but with it's got a bit complicated and, er, it doesn't work!

    What did you try? Maybe someone can improve upon it.

      Ranking Records

      Hi David:

      When faced with similar issues, I usually follow this methodology...

      1. Create a field in your table, into which you can post the values from the calculated field. I like to do this to ensure that scripts based on those values, are not slowed down by the need to calculate a value for each record as my script steps through each record...

      (Also create a field called "Rank" if one does not exist already)

      2. Sort the table by the field in question in the direction that will make the value of that field, the top ranking value.

      3. Create a script with three variables. (say X, Y and Z)

      4. Set X = the value of the field in question for the first record.

      Set that record's "Rank" field to "1" beacuse it is the top ranking value.

      Set Y = "1" because you are setting rank # 1. set Z = 0, because you have yet to repeat a rank, and you will use variable "Z" to count how many times a rank repeats, if it happens.

      5. Move to the next record...

      if the value of the field in question is the same as the previous record, set it's Rank field = to "Y" (the rank value from the previous record)

      set Z = 1, because the rank value has been repeated once. This way, if the next record has a new value, then you know what rank to set it at... (3 as opposed to 2, based on how you wanted to handle repeating/shared ranks)

      If this record has a different value than the previous, then set X = to the value of the field in question;

      set it's rank field = Y+1;

      set the variable Z = 0, because the rank has not been repeated.

      6. Move to the next record and cycle through all of the records until the script reaches the end of the table...

      Does this make sense? I can try to illustrate with actual script steps if you wish...

        That makes a lot of sense. It's very similar to the approach I was trying. I think the difficulties I was having were due to my unfamiliarity with the scripting process. Being a newby, I'm using almost 100% action scripting and I was having problems with pointers and variables and my work arounds weren't working! (I won't go into the details but if someone could tell me how to identify a field in a script written from the code editor rather than a button within a form I'd appreciate the lesson!)

        The difference in your suggestion is the use of a field to store the calculated values. I can see that is a better approach and will give it a shot.

        Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a long reply. Really appreciate it!
