Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to restrict edit on particular user

    I have an embedded browse on a form that has a field "Credit_Exc->EXCEPTION_CODE" (c5).
    I have used users and groups for my security on this database and have several users.
    I only want to allow the user "bburton" edit capabilities to rows where Exception_Code = "12" but can't get the code right to make this happen. I have tried the following on the embedded browse "CanRowChange" but it allows the user bburton to edit.

    ==== CODE ====
    user_name() <> "bburton" .or. user_name() = "bburton" .and. View_Exceptions:browse2:code.value = "12"

    Are you thinking that "Change" and "Edit" are equivalent in this situation? The canrowchange event fires
    Just before you navigate (change to, my elaboration) to a new row.
    and has nothing to do with editing.

    I would suggest code for the onarrive and ondepart events which checks the user name and sets the browseobjectname.allow_change(.F.) or browseobjectname.allow_change(.T.) accordingly.
    There can be only one.

      Thanks Stan. I am just not getting the method for this. I have a limited amount of experience in xbasic coding and don't get what I need to do. I will post the error I am receiving later on.

        Stan, I read the description of the <OBJECT>.ALLOW_CHANGE() method which "...sets the Allow Changes setting for a layout". If I am trying to allow or prevent changes to ONE particular row of data based on a fields value in that row, do I need a method which allows/prevents changes to a form? Just trying to understand. I have attached a screenshot of the form I am working on. The browse at the bottom of the form "BROWSE2" is the only browse that the user bburton is allowed to enter into. The only row of data that I want the user to be able to alter or edit is the row where the first field "code" is = 12. I just need some additional help with the xbasic.
        Happy New Year.

          George, instead of trying to control this through events in the form layout, or events in the embedded browse object, why not do it through field rules for the table?

          Read up on the "CanChangeRecord" event in field rules. I think it could be used to prevent users other than bburton to "change" the record.

          Code:
          'In field rules, choose Events tab
          'Choose Record Events
          'Insert this script in the CanChangeRecord event

          Select
             case Exception_code = "12"
          	if user_name() <> "bburton" then
                     ui_msg_box("Oops","You may not change this record")
                     cancel()
                  end if
          end select

            I have tried the above and get the following error:
            Script:Table( Credit_exc )CanChangeRecord line:6
            case Exception_code = "12"
            Variable "Exception_code" not found.

              George,

              If "Exception_code" is the actual field name try this:

              Code:
              tbl = table.current()
              Select
                 case alltrim(tbl.Exception_code) = "12"
              	if user_name() <> "bburton" then
                         ui_msg_box("Oops","You may not change this record")
                         cancel()
                      end if
              end select
              If the fieldname is different, use the actual field name in your table instead of "Exception_code".

                Perfect, thanks Stan and Tom.

                BTW, I altered the code to the following since user bburton was the only one needing edit restrictions.
                ================================
                tbl = table.current()
                Select
                case alltrim(tbl.Exception_code) <> "12"
                if user_name() = "bburton" then
                ui_msg_box("Oops","You may not change this record")
                cancel()
                end if
                end select
