Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    .adb to two folders?

The intent was to keep data files separate for V5 & V7 to make sure all went well. However, now data changes are reflected in both. They should be seperate.
Sequence; maybe this is the problem. Data files originally in folder say aV5. Copied the data files to say bV7. Installed V7 (activated) under W2000 as new database. Tables "added" from bV7. None of the many scripts (code) came along. In DOS went in to bV7 folder and copied the 'old' db *.alb, *.alm, and *.alx to the 'new' db. This got the code scripts. Deleted all the 'old' db*.* items. Now, as stated, whether under V5 or V7, the data changes are reflected in both folders (aV5 & bV7). Not understanding how this happens. The correct paths are ostensibly shown in each program (V5 & V7). What is the best way to unscramble this comingling of files. I was not able to edit the *.adb file(s) to ensure that the "correct" path was being taken. Tried to find path with A5_Path, but no luck.
Now a button to unmark all records in a file does not work in either program (5 or 7).

    Richard,

A better strategy would have been to:

    a) keep all the tables in the same folder as the database dictionaries while using A5v5. This means all the tables and their dictionaries would be in the same folder as the ADB file for your database.

    b) after installing vers 7, simply copy the entire database folder including the database dictionaries and all the tables and their dictionaries to a new folder for use only with vers 7.

I'm guessing that you missed the boat at step (a). I don't know of an easy way to sort this out other than starting over completely. Perhaps others will have better ideas. If I'm guessing right, and you have to move the tables and their dictionaries to get them into the same folder as the ADB file for the A5v5 database, remember to "drop" (not delete) them from the database, and then "add" them back after they're in position.

      .adb to two folders?

Thanks Tom. I bleive that's basically what I did, except that I created the second forlder before loading V7.
Hence, your a) yep; b) flip flopped,i.e, copied first, then loaded. This should not have made a difference.
I'm still puzzled how "identical" files in two different folders can be changed/updated from either db. The folders should be stand alone. I'm still of the opinion, that it is the *.adb that somehow points to both folders, but that I cannot edit and "correct".
Also, following what you said, but albeit reversed by me in b) the code (scripts) did not get picked up by V7 until I copied the "old" *.alb, *.alm, and *.alx to the "new" and deleted the "old" *.adb.
Your recommendation to start over is probably the best way to go.
PS Tom, Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
