Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Static lookup grid

I need to create a lookup of static values that will fill two fields from two columns. My lookup would look something like this:

    Code:
    Priority Sequence
    ===================
    High 1
    Medium 2
    Low 3
    Cancelled 4
    Completed 5
So I assume I have to create a Dialog Component?
    But how do I create a 2-column fill-in list?

Even though the values are static, I would put them in a table. That gives you all kinds of options for lookups.

Peter, I've found no options in WAS to let you fill 1+n fields from a lookup (like you can in desktop), static or dynamic. You also can't create a static lookup that shows two columns, but only records the first column's value. You'd have to fake the dual column look anyway.

However, maybe you could have the Sequence field in your table as a calculated field based on the value for the first column. I think that if you do so, and place a read-only Sequence field in your grid, that once they submit the record, the Sequence value will appear in the grid, populated from the database field rules - I don't know if this works.

Lookup filling more than 0ne field

        Peter,

define a lookup grid with the fields you want to use.
Go to the grid which will use this lookup and define a field which will trigger the lookup by:
        entering under field properties:
        lookup: true.
Under lookup definition you can now enter the lookup grid and under fieldmapping you can enter the fields you want to map from the lookupgrid into fields of your grid. You can enter more than 1 field here.

        regards, Ron

Ron - that's great. I never explored the Lookup item before, thanks.

I also tested my idea where you set a field rule on the table to write the current date (or any other value) as a calculated field. That works and is reflected in the grid as soon (but not before) you submit your record.

            Ron,

This is a static list, not a table. Thanks for the thought though.

Steve, Yeah, I thought of going the calulated field route. I think we need WAS field rules.

Steve, that exactly what I did late last night. That works, but like a lot of things, it's a compromise.

                  Static List

                  Peter,

What is wrong with defining static values in a table and then using the method I described to populate the other table? Until field rules are being offered I think this is more flexible than using calculating fields, because you use standard functionality.

                  regards, Ron

No argument, Ron. It's just that I hate adding tables for a tiny list of static choices.
