Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Accessing Session Information

I would like to be able to see the current session "objects" in an A5 WAS instance. Is there a method (function) I could use to list the current, active session objects? If possible, it would also be nice to be able to dump the session-related information (a la the A5W_INFO() method) for an arbitrary session "handle." I realize the security implications, but I promise not to hurt myself ;)

BTW, I've read Steve Wood's "Here's how to audit WAS traffic," but this is not what I want to do.

    Thanks.

I've moved your question to the Web App Server area where it belongs.

Are you asking how to see the web sessions from the desktop? If so, it is not possible.

      No, I asked "[i]s there a method (function)...to list...session objects...a la A5W_INFO()". I would craft an HTML page with <%A5 A5W_list_sessions() %> on it.

Is this what you're looking for:
        Code:
        properties_enum("session")
The above will show you everything within the current web session. Sessions cannot be accessed from outside that session, so you cannot get info from session A from code run inside session B.

Thanks, Lenny. I'd tried that, but (as you point out) it does not let me access other session objects. To be honest, I really don't want to probe any deeper than to have an accurate count of the number of session objects in the WAS at any given point in time. This number should be trivial to expose to a method like A5W_SESSION_COUNT().

Without such a count, it makes it hard to operate a WAS in an "adult" manner. For example, if I wish to take down a WAS instance, I need to know how many users are potentially in the middle of some sort of "transaction." I sure wouldn't want a customer to get to the "Buy" button just after I've restarted the WAS.

Routing customer traffic around a server (with, for example, load balancing or a DNS stunt) would tend to dry up the active sessions over time, but, even with a (say) 10 minute session timeout, a user could occasionally click some link and thus keep their session alive for "who knows how long."

A session count, coupled with working server variables, could make the "draining" process much more robust. Sure, a user could still wander around the content tree indefinitely (I've got a fix for this, too), but at least if I could tell that only 1 user remained on the WAS (versus 100), I could risk stopping the server with only minimal customer impact.

If you're just looking for a count of active sessions, that is something I can expose for you.

Expose, Lenny, expose! LOL Actually, if that could be done, I'd be truly appreciative. For those of you reading this thread, let me ask: how many support organizations give you this kind of response?

There will be a new function in the next patch that makes this available. In the interim, you could look at <webroot>\session_folders and see how many sub-folders are in there. There will be one for each active session.

Lenny, now that I've found out about the folders in session_folders, I have a session count. I used FILEFIND.GET() and counted all the "D" types except "." and "..".

                  Thanks.
