Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    javascript doSubmit()

    I've been trying to override the provided Submit button so I can have a Previous and a Next button instead. Taking snippits from other code, and Lenny's help, I have the following javascript on my A5W page. Clicking one of the images refreshes the page (as though it is submitting) and does not produce any error -- but the table is not updated and the screen reverts to the previous values.

    At the top I have:

    HTML Code:
    ......
    <head>
    ......
    <script LANGUAGE="javascript">
    function doSubmit(iInput)
    	{
    		document.forms[0].value=iInput;
    		document.forms[0].submit();
    	}
    window.onUnload=doSubmit;
    </script>

    <%a5
    .....

    For the individual buttons I have:

    HTML Code:
    <a href="javascript:doSubmit(-1)"><img src="btn_prev_nav.gif" ></a>

    and

    <a href="javascript:doSubmit(1)"><img src="btn_next_nav.gif" ></a>

    Steve, if you don't use Firefox as your web browser, you should. It has a Javascript console that shows you runtime errors in your code. I think you will find that there is no value property of document.forms[0]. What is it that you are tryin to set to -1 or 1?

      I fired up Firefox. The page produced no errors in the javaconsole. I purpously broke it to make sure the console is working.

      Believe me, I also tried your original code suggestion (below) and that produced no errors either:

      HTML Code:
      <script type="text/javascript">
      function submitOnNav()
      {
          f=document.forms[0];
          f.submit();
      }
      window.onUnload=submitOnNav;
      </script>

        Lenny,

        I may end up eating my words, but I do not think that javascript can submit an A5 form.

        Actually, I think the script IS submitting the form, but none of the A5 processing is taking place like validation, update, insert, etc. The javascript submit() method DOES refresh the screen, but does not process the record as far as Alpha is concerned.

        I've tried everything you've suggested plus code from other resources. I've tried putting the event inside the grid (freeform area, which doesn't really work) and outside in the A5W page. And I've tried forms[n] as well as referenceing the form by name.

        What I am trying to accomplish is a fairly standard look with two Submit buttons. One takes the user forwards, the other takes the user to the previous form (I don't want to use the browser Back button, which I would disable).

        I know you are not going to jump up and provide this ;) , but what I need is the ability (on grid and dialog components) to have TWO submit buttons, each with their own target designations.

        Either that, or to make this javascript submit() actually work so I could incorporate that into making an intuitive user interface.

          hi steve

          i might be wrong but i believe that the
          form cant be submitted after the window onunload event
          has fired

          to check your javascript:

          remove the "window.onUnload=doSubmit;"
          save and republish the form and then check
          to see if the code submits and
          saves the data when you click the button

          if it does then the javascript code is working
          and its an event timing issue

          just a thought

            I had already tried that. The javascript sources I looked at never had the onUnload as part of the instructions.

              Steve,
              What is the action associated with the submit() for document.forms[0]?
              You can certainly use javascript to submit an .a5w form. I do it on a form that I use every day.

                Apparently that's my problem. Just like back in high school, I have no action. The difference between what Alpha fires and my code, is showing that the "button_name=Save". Following all the examples I could find, I have script of:

                <script LANGUAGE="javascript">
                function doSubmit(iInput)
                {
                document.forms[0].value=iInput;
                document.forms[0].submit();
                }
                </script>

                and a clickable object such as:

                <a href="javascript:doSubmit(1)"><img src="btn_next_nav.gif" ></a>

                What I assume is missing is something that says POST. Can you tell me what is missing?

                  hi steve

                  here is one way to accomplish what you want,

                  by simulating a click for the original submit button on the form

                  see the attached file
