Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

WAS does not run as a Windows Service

The WAS is not running as a Windows Service. A service normally appears in the Services and Applications section of Manage Computer. This means if my server reboots (which it does) that Alpha WAS will not load until I go and manually log in. WAS is in the Startup directory, so it will load when I log in, but that means I have to physically log in. I can't omit login requirements for security reasons.

Considering the above, does anyone know if it is possible to cause WAS to auto load on reboot? I know I cannot add WAS as a service, that requires programming at the code level.

This topic has been covered a number of times. You can get a full description at Automatically Restarting the Web Application Server

      Jerry,

Yes, I know about that. But it requires you to let the computer automatically log on. As I said, I can't do that for security reasons. I guess I could establish a minimal user logon, but I even hate that idea. I think no one should allow their server, or any company computer, to automatically log on. I'll do it for now if I have to, but a program like WAS should run as a true Windows service.

-- But I bet I can't even do it on a Windows 2003 Server. I'll try, but there are some mandatory notes that the server demands if it reboots unplanned. You can't log in until you satisfy that request.

      HTML Code:
You have to allow Windows to start up without a user logon

You're right and it will in the future...just not yet.

Thanks - may be a good time for me to advocate for a shared bug base?

The logon issue came up when I tried to access my WAS this morning, at 4AM. It was down because the server rebooted apparently from a failed backup attempt (breaking in new Veritas software). I had to access remotely and start Alpha.

I'm about to go live with phase II which has to be up 24x7. What I probably should do is purchase a new server just for the purpose of running the WAS, put the database on a different server, and allow the WAS server to log on automatically.

If you mean something like bugzilla, I'm working on setting something up.

One of the advantages is that you would not get bombarded with bug reports (if I am typical) if I knew something was either on the list, or PAD. Its always a wag when I report something - not sure if I am doing something useful, or wasting your developer time.

                  Beta Testers...

                  Aaron,

The name Bugzilla rhymes with the monster Godzilla and has negative connotations. I may have a better idea.

Personally, what bug reports I have sent in via email, have all gone unanswered. I cringe every time I have to post a bug-report disguised as question on this forum, because aside from the obvious support this forum offers, it is also an important public relations vehicle, and I NEVER want to say anything that would discourage new users.

I suggest you set up a NEW forum category called Beta Testers. Maybe you can make this group private; by invitation only. In this way only those who are technically adept at tracing bugs and providing working examples will be permitted to participate.

As long as you allow this Beta Testers to be one build ahead of the distribution build then the name rings true, and all those nasty debugging issues can be kept out of this general forum.

Bugzilla is a bug reporting software already out in the public which we have used internally in the past. Adding "-zilla" to the end of names is a convention in the open source community, hence Mozilla, Bugzilla, Filezilla, and a plethora of other products.

Thanks for the link Aaron. That makes more sense.

Are there any beta-testers? Or is all beta-testing done internally?

We do have a beta testing period prior to each release. If you'd like to get added to the list, send Selwyn an email.
