Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Replacement for Alpha Sports style Browse

I like the style of the Alpha Sports Customer form. You can quick filter A-Z and select what field you want to search/sort -- its all a very nice setup. But I hated having to revisit the code every time I wanted to apply that functionality to another form or application. So I did some work on the code to make it universal, so the objects can be dropped into any form without modification.

I put this all in an attached PDF, its easier to bring up this PDF and use the text capture to drag-drop the code into your new form. I don't profess (yet) to be an expert in xbasic, so be sure to test and tweak if needed. If anyone wants the objects themselves, I will make them available.

With the ability to add controls to the control library we probably don't need this anymore.

Well, I use this on many dbf I have created and I always have to go back and start from scratch although it is
easier everytime. I wanted to see how steve did it here in the Code archive, but no Code! What can you do.
There is a slight difference in the supercontrol and the one Steve is talking about in that it is tied to a variable
which you can then switch at will from first name to last name or middle name to find someone. May be that is
a question I could ask is how to get the Alphabet supercontrol to point to a variable like that.

I was able to find that document in my backups, from January 2006. It is re-attached. That was a very long time ago, I do not work on Desktop apps anymore so I have no idea what the code in the attachment does. I do hope it isn't embarrassing.

Thanks a lot Steve its really good. I appreciate it and I am sure others will also.
Now If I could only get you to comment your code on XML export I would be set. As it is I will
have to puzzle it out as I really need it. Too bad you couldn't give us a little dbf that shows
how it really works. Just wishing but I really think it would help more now than when you originally
brought it out I think it was sort of ahead of its time.
                Thanks Again.
