Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New to A5w - Question

I have been using Alpha for years, and have many very large desktop spplications. We are evaluating ver 7 and the web server. In tryingto do the evaluation, I am attempting to run the web app demo.

The 3rd button "Laaunch the Home page" does NOT.

I opened up the form, and did an interactive of te code under the button.
    This is the result:

    ?a5w_computeURL("local webroot","default","mainMenu.a5w")

the only way I counld launch the main menu was to navigate to the folder and double click on the "mainMenu.a5w" file.

    C:\Program Files\A5V7\Samples\WebAppServerDemo\Web_Applications_Demo.WebProjects\Default.WebProject\MainMenu.A5W

Is it just me, or is something wrong??

    Thanks in advance

    Tom

    Tom,

It does work. Turn on the WAS (upper left button in the demo) first.

I followed the steps as directed on the form. WAS was running when I pressed the "demo" button.

      Thanks

        Peter,

Notice the difference in the URL as created by alpha, and the actual address as I browsed to it. Does A5v7 setup aliases to the actual folder? If I was to set this up to be accessed by others, DO I need to share the folder, or does the WAS do that for me?

        Tom.

Could it be a bad install?

Here's what I get on my machine:

            ?a5w_computeURL("local webroot","default","mainMenu.a5w")

Check to see if Alpha created the A5webroot folder and the related sub-directories on your machine.

All of the folder and files are there, follow the path in my second example. My machine is on a fairly large network, so that is why I have an identifier of "TOM" instead of "localhost". My point is that the actual path to the mainMenu.a5w is significantly longer than the path as created by Alpha.

Tom, I'm not sure I'm following you. When you publish the files, the mainMenu.a5w should be under the a5webroot directory.

The source file, of course, will be at:
                C:\Program Files\A5V7\Samples\WebAppServerDemo\Web_Applications_Demo.WebProjects\Default.WebProject\MainMenu.A5W

If you are using "Tom" instead of a5webroot, I assume you created a new profile?

                  Peter,
You're right, it is there, but it stioo doesn't launch. I even tried double clicking on the file in the webroot directory, and the source came up in a notepad window instead of IE.

                  Still perplexed,

                  Tom

                    Just to review:
You created a new profile named "Tom"
                    You published the files
                    You ran the WAS
You clicked on the button and it still does not work?

From the controlpanel, run the "Web Projects" control panel form the menu bar. There you will see a profile button...

                          Here's what I have there.

Should I have a different profile set up?

Tom, the profile's "Target Folder" will control where the files are published to. Your's says "default" which means the files go to the a5webroot folder. But your first post indicated that the folder is "tom", not a5webroot. So there is a pathing issue. How did "tom" come to be?

                              Peter,

As I stated earlier, My computer is one of about 200 on our network. Each machine has a unique name on the network. mine just happens to be "TOM".

The a5 variable, "local webroot" must look to the machine name for its pathing.
