Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha 5 v7

Hello, My name is Brandon Burtnik, and I have been creating a program in Alpha5 v6 since the summer. This program is used to calculate prices for orders that are received for a Printing Business. It also then converts the order into a docket so that it is legible off the computer. Now, the two main sets (one for the price and one for the docket) have an extremely large number of fields (more so the price set). Whenever the program has to load the sets it is too slow for the employees to work efficiently. The size of the sets really comes from the mother table of each set. The Quote table itself has 610 fields, and almost all of these are calculation fields!!!! There is so much information that must be stored for later use, i cannot very well get rid of some of the fields, because all of them are very important to what the final outcome of the program must do. I was wondering whether purchasing Alpha5 v7 would increase the speed of this monstrous program. Or if there is anything else I could do to speed up this painfully slow program. The employees here usually have to wait from 30 sec to 1 min every time the sets must be loaded. And they are to be constantly using it for when a new customer calls. Please if someone would be so kind to as help me out on this, that would be excellent.

    Thank you in advance

    Hi Brandon --

If my memory is correct, you're the one who wrote recently about the huge report with hundreds of calculated fields? At the time I suggested that it might be a good idea to re-evaluate what you're doing -- I presume that's part of the reason for the current post.

It may be a good idea to invest a few hours with a professional developer who can look at what you do and suggest more effecient methods.

Yea. That is me. Earlier today, before I started to work on it, I was thinking the same thing about the professional. I shall look into finding someone to look over my program and give me a few pointers. I am sure that it would be for the best. Thank you Steve, your help is greatly appreciated.

However, would it be a good idea to purchase the A;pha5 v7, do you think it would increase the speed at all?

If you have a table/form with (300+ , 400+, 500+) calculated fields I don't think that anything can make it faster than it is at the moment. Apart from a redesign, that is.

Perhaps you need to look at "staging" the calculations by having the occur following a button push or some other action. Like Steve said, a consultant could probably help you break down the process so that it's more efficent for the users.

            Brandon,

            Please read this announcement:
            http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...nt.php?f=5&a=7

There is no need to name your thread "Alpha 5 v7" since you are in the Alpha Five Version 7 forum already. You will be likely get more responses with a more aptly named thread title.
