Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Couldn't load rules file

Using Alpha Four v8, we have developed a problem after deleting three years worth of old files and using dos to print some reports instead of windows. Before the problem, we would print out a daily "deposit report" that consisted of all of our small hotel's transactions with a total dollar amount of all of the days' receipts. We would than "update" the report which caused all of the previous receipts to drop off and the dollar amount to zero out.

After the problem, when we print out the deposit report a pop up box comes up that says "Couldn't load rules file". The report prints okay but about a third of the day's transactions don't drop off after updating and therefore the dollar amount doesn't zero out. After some weeks with this problem and the accumulation each day of more and more transactions that won't drop off, we are printing out a 20 page report with a large dollar amount when we should just have a page or two.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

    Hi Dan,

I've encountered this problem twice. The first time it happened, I immediately installed the backup "field rule file" from the backup made the previous evening. This solved the problem. Be careful though if you try this. Rename or back up the original field rule file so that if this does not solve the problem, you can replace the original file or return the file name back to its' original name.

The second time this happened, I gave it some thought and then checked out the files properties by "right-clicking" on it. For some reason, its' attributes had been changed to "read-only". I unchecked this and problem solved.

I cannot recall the file for field rule files; something is telling me that it's .rln, but I can't be sure. Check your documentation or reference manual. It's in the back.

Please let me know if this helps in any way.

    Thanks,
    Mike

      help coming

      Mike,

Thanks for your reponse to my problem. After reading your suggestions, I did a little exploring but nothing jumped out as an easy fix that I would be comfortable changing. I am not very familiar with Alpha but have an expert who plans on helping me in a few days. I'll pass on your suggestions and hopefully we can get everything working normally again.

      Thanks,

      Dan
