Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sessionid in URL a problem

I have a simple a5w pages that has some links to FTP addresses. But when I click on the links it adds a sessionid to the URL and I get an address error. Is there a way to stop that from happening on links to external URLs.

    Thanks,
    Brett

This only happens if you have cookies turned off either in your browser or in the server. If this is the case, the server adds the session id to each link in order to maintain session state. It has no way of knowing if a given link is local or external so it adds it to all of them.

I don't have control over all the user's cookie settings. Is there any kind of work around for this? I just want a page with FTP site links, but they don't work with the sessionid added to the URL.

Can you give me an example of a URL that will not work?

A typical FTP url would be something like ftp://ftp.alphasoftware.com/ - does this work for you?

Now with a session id added, the URL would look like ftp://ftp.alphasoftware.com/?a5w_ses...34567890123456 - does this one work? If not, exactly what happens when you try it?

Both of these URLs work for me, no matter which browser I test them in.

If you can help me more clearly understand why it does not work, we can work on a solution for you.

          Sessionid and cookie problem summary

Here is an explanation of the whole problem. I can't give actual links and sites because they are password protected customer sites and some of the problems are sporadic.

Something causes my cookies to become locked or unavailable in IE (not sure about Firefox), when I access the sites repeatedly, even though my computer and WAS are set to accept cookies. Then it begins to put the sessionid in the URL. I can't replicate this, it just seems to happen frequently. I have to manually delete all cookies and then it starts working normally again. I've had it happen on 2 different computers, 3 different hosts and numerous a5 web applications. On one site, it kept adding duplicate sessionids to the URL for every page I visited. After deleting all cookies the problem went away.

When I'm experiencing the problem above, it causes certain kinds of links to stop working. Any FTP link doesn't work, such as ftp://www.incwebs.com/a5/. Also links with variables in the URL stop working. So www.incwebs.com/test.asp would work but www.incwebs.com/test.asp?x=1234 would not. If I manually type the links in the browser and add the sessionid, the links work fine. So I know that adding the sessionid shouldn't cause a problem.

I'm now guessing that this problem is more of a cookie problem than a link problem, but I'm not sure. Sorry I can't give you something more replicatable.
