Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Personal help in Australia

I wonder if there is a experienced Alpha developer in Australia (preferably Queensland) who may be able to provide some personal tutoring to help me shorten my learning curve with Alpha Five V7. I am a novice to Alpha, though not to programming, and I would prefer to spend some money rather than spend too much time getting to know some basics and some Xbasic.

Thank you Stan, I checked and the only consultant listed for Australia is the distributor who is not in a position to assist. Thanks for the thought.

        Mal,
I'm in the same boat but in Sydney - will let you know if I discover an answer to the same question.

        Best of luck.

            help getting up and going

            Mal & John,

If no one turns up in your areas you might try contacting Valerie Simkin at PACE Training (there's usually a link listed at the bottom of the www.alphasoftware.com web page). I took her Level 1 & 2 classes at the National Users Conference last Spring and found them extremely helpful. I think she offers online training as well as in person.

PACE Training is running some international training sessions using VoIP for the conference call. You might check http://www.pacetraining.com.

Full disclosure: I'm the trainer for most of these courses.

                  Thanks Bob,

I am certainly looking into this option.

                    Thank you Steve,

I am considering this option, I gather you are recommending the live online sessions.

When I first started teaching the live sessions on-line sessions I was concerned about losing much of what can be taught in face-to-face classroom-type settings. I've been pleasantly surprised and pleased by the tools available for on-line teaching.

                        Thanks Steve.

I am not experienced in using these systems, though I did log into some webcast last month (one of Alpha's possibly ?), is this the same, or similar, in operation... I remember that I was hooked in at international call rates (while the US customers had some type of single local call fee), obviously international rates for 2 days would add up. I checked your site and see the next Level 1 course is a month away, is that correct ? I believe you have other online options (online and/or download ?), could you advise your opinion of the comparison to your live tutorials systems please.

I suggest you talk with Valerie at PACE Training. Her email is [email protected]. And visit the web site I suggested below for info on course content, which is much more substantial than the overview you've already seen. There's a 2-day Level 1 course a 2-day Level 2 course, a 2-day XBasic course and a (currently) 1-day JumpStart to the Web. These are hands-on, interactive courses meant for teaching and learning.

We're beginning training using VoIP, so there's no long-distance phone charges involved.
