Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Deleted records A5 vs A4

Have read lots of posts on "delete", think I have a new question.
I have been using A4 forever (since v2), currently v8. I don't do any heavy duty stuff, just maintain a big mailing list. I find that it is just plain easier to do data entry.
However, since XP, A4 does a lousy job on format and printing reports.
So, I use A5 to do that, and just copy my dbf/dbt to a "work" directory and access with A5.
Question: In A4, which does not have "mark", when we get returned mail, I "delete". I never zap. When we find new address, I "undelete". (there is other info I do not want to lose, which is permanent even if we don't know where the person is. I can in A4 set "show undeleted" or "show all" as I wish.
Now, when I look at my copy file in A5, I am surprised to see records in there that are deleted in A4 (in an A4 browse there is a diamond to show delete, in a form is "DEL" in lower status.
Is there a way in A5 to not show the A4 deletes? I had assumed that delete is a data switch in dbf which is the same for both programs.
Yes, I could only copy over "undeleted", but I use record number to control some actions.
    Thanks for any ideas,
    Brad

How are you making the copy from the A4 table?

Tom, I am just copying the .dbf & .dbt with Explorer.
I also just tried "copy" from within A4, if that is what you wondered, same effect.

It should be, but the data format is different between the systems, similar but not identical.

Look at a default browse in A5 and see if the record shows as marked. The row selector box will change when marked. Right click on the selector box to mark or unmark to see the difference. (The row selector is the little gray box prior to the first field)

If so, you can filter on marked() or .not. marked().

Brad, you asked whether there's a way to not show the deletes? I say, just don't copy them. Use the option in Alpha Four to copy only records not marked for deletion.

Interesting, no records are found to be marked, however, find, which works in form, does not work in browse! In fact, default browse will not navigate at all, first page only.
Gets better! If I locate a known A4 deleted in form view, and then switch to browse from that window, do not see the deleted record, rather the next record.
I bet that browse knows delete from A4, form does not.
I think I will need to devise a new field to control the info I need to transfer between programs.

Thanks, as I commented to Al, plan B is called for. A5 does not like (it hates, blows out browse) A4 deletes,
So, I will add a field in A4 to capture system>recno and make it a data field, then transfer the non-deletes only. I do not need good printed reports on deleted people.
              Thanks for the ideas,
              Brad

                Problem Solved

A5 may not like A4 deletes, however, it will "undelete and mark" them.
After this quick operation, browse works perfectly.
I suspect that I will continue not to open my A4 file with A5, but always work on a copy, just in case.
                Thanks for the hints.

Your first post indicated that you copied your A4 files to another directory prior to having A5 use those files.

Always do that ..... for your continued sanity... ;)

You can count on that, directory in a different partition.

Brad, Does it make a different if you Duplicate the database to A5 Dir, or zap the A5 table and then use the append command from A5 for the A4 data.

I don't use the delete in A4 to keep records, as I will normally do a pack after deleting. Somewhere in using A5 to print reports from A4 data I thought I had a problem using a copy of the A4 files so now I created an APPEND operation in A5 and use a script to zap the table in A5 and then append from A4. However, up to now I have not done much.
