Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Letter Printing

    Hi

    I trying to print a letter from the web, and come up with the following code:

    IF eval_valid("session.centre") = .f. Then
    goto skipletter
    end if
    dim filter as c
    dim order as c
    Filter = "Centre_Id="+quote(session.centre)
    Dim filename as c
    filename = session.session_folder + chr(92) + "templetter1.pdf"
    filename = letter.saveas("three_week@[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\threeweek.set","pdf",filter,order,filename,.f.)
    if file.exists(filename)
    response.redirect(session.session_url + "templetter1.pdf?" + time("hms3"))
    end if
    skipletter:

    this works on the local server but not on our main web server.....

    The code may be completly wrong and it only works locally by some amazing chance of fate.

    Can anyone help?????????

    What happens on the server where it is not working? Do you get any type of error message or anything?

        When you get the blank browser screen, check the URL. If the URL is the name of the pdf, the problem may that Acrobat is not opening in the browser. If you are using Mozilla and an earlier Acrobat like 5.0, the browser won't open the file. Updating to Acrobat reader 7 should fix that problem.

          Check that on the main server the [PathAlias.ADB_path] in your letter definition has been replaced with the correct path to the data. Look in c:\a5webroot or wherever the actual webroot is to look at what has been "published" to the webroot.

            I have reports that run on the same system using a similiar script and they work fine.... Its a real puzzle all the correct files have been published to their correct locations in the webroot.

            The print script i used was for a report that works, and has been modified to point to the letter....

              Your script looks very good with one exception. You don't need the chr(92) after session.session_folder. If you test the value by outputting it on a test page, you will get something like this

              C:\A5Webroot\session_folders\7ae629dabf8f4df88181e89f59e3722b\

              that includes the ending backsplash. Other than that, the script looks fine. As a test, you could try temporarily hardcoding a filter expression with values you know work on the desktop instead of using the session variable.

              Again, after the code runs, what URL is in the address bar? The answer to that is very important to determine where the error occurs in the process.

              If the server has error logging it turned on, are any errors recorded? Error logging is a great way to track unknown problems.

                  That seems to indicate that the PDF was not generated. Try changing
                  Code:
                  if file.exists(filename)
                      response.redirect(session.session_url + "templetter1.pdf?" + time("hms3"))
                  end if
                  to
                  Code:
                  if file.exists(filename)
                      response.redirect(session.session_url + "templetter1.pdf?" + time("hms3"))
                  else
                      ? "The PDF file (" + filename + ") was not created."
                  end if
