Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Convert Text file to Data

Anyone have a good way to convert a large text file that is not seperated by tabs or comma's into a data file without going through the whole file manually adding comma's to seperate the data?

You really need to give us more to work on than that.

There are more alternatives to importing than using a comma.

How about taking enough of the file to describe what you have and posting it with some instructions so we can help?

think right to left and pick off the phone numbers, zip, city, state

drop the first few left characters and you are left with a comma separated record with 1 to m names.

You'll probably need to write it in xbasic...

            Parsing this file

I'm not at all sure that even xbasic could handle all that you are asking.

You don't say what to do with lines that have the number then multiple names, then the address info.

At least one name, "JohnPerticone" isn't separated into first and last.

Some names have an appendage "George W. Reilly (BM)," which would have to go somewhere.

Some lines have the appendage as comma separated data "Mike Anderson, (Asst. BM)"

At least one line has some sort of semi-colon separator "James C. Gear, PO Box 5040, Cheyenne, WY 82003;"

At least one line has embedded address info meaning that there are names, address info, more names, more address info and the one I saw also has two voice phone numbers connected via "or" --- "75 -- Harry Kreuser, Scott Redman, Steve Breitlow, 11175 West Parkland Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53224. (414)359-1310 or (888)248-3392. Fax No. (414)359-1323. Louis Pody, 6200 Gisholt Dr., Ste 101, Madison, WI 53713. (608)222-1650. "

I hope you come up with something or someone else lends a hand but I think the data is too unstructured to lend itself to machine manipulated import.

                Howdy,

I a newbie also so what I would do is Import the Tab Separated Data into Excel and re-arrange the fields (Columns) in Excel to the desired order then export from Excel into a CSV format.

                Could this work for you?

                John

There is a very nice piece of software called "Monarch"thatallows one to take a flat text file and converrt it into different formats. They refer to it as data mining software. It's very easy to use and is continually improved. The most common usage of it is to take reports outputted to text files and convert to easily importable formats like ascii delimited.
