Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Default Values on Grid

Is there any way to pass field values from one grid to another?
If I click a linked field and open a new page that is defined as a Grid, can I pass information from one grid to another?

You can pass it as a Request variable in your linked field. It will be available the next page. What are you trying to accomplish?

      Passing data

When I click a field on one page that is a linked field, I want to open up a new URL and pass data to that page. I have tried every thing that the documention indicates. mypage.a5w?address=123 xxx does not work.
I tried mypage.a5w?mypage_link_1c=address=123 xxx does not work.
      I thought about using cookies.
      Any ideas?

Take a look at Creating a Session Variable When Clicking on a Link.

With the URL that you have constructed, mypage.a5w will have a variable named mypage_link_1c available to it. How are you trying to access it on the page?

A session variable is not really appropriate if you just want to get a value from one page to another. Sure, it will do the job, but it's like using a sledge hammer to hang a picture on the wall.

Session variables have a much longer lifetime than just passing a value as part of a URL and they consume server resources. They tend to be over-used and end up wasting the finite server resources.

Session variables can be very useful and powerful and certinaly have their place. This probably is't one of those places though.

Passing data from one url to another.

Lenny how would you suggest doing this?
I'm just try to display it in a field that will be written to a database.

                data

How do you pass the data from the url into a new form?
I tried the session method, now how does the new form read the session.data?

Hi Greg. Are you asking the same thing I was asking on this thread: http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=59327

I am trying to find a simple, URL encoding method for passing "x=y" into a grid so that, when the grid is displayed, the database field "x" is shown on the grid as having the value "y" and not whatever may actually be the real value in the database.

However, I think the idea is similar... Is it?

The main reason I was interested in URL encoding is that I wanted to be able to set "x" to "y", "z", etc. based on a Navigation System choice. In navigation system components, there is a URL field that I wanted to augment with "?x=y" or "?x=z" depending on which menu choice the user takes.

                    Data

Yes, I think we are asking the same question.
What I ended up doing was writing out a cookie and then reading it in and parsing with javascript then populating the fields. It works great.

Does anyone have a non-cookie/JavaScript solution to this problem? I've been asking and waiting for an answer for quite some time now. See also the thread referenced in my last post.

Not meaning to detract from Greg's pragmatic and useful "workaround," I certainly would hope that there is a way to do this within the confines of A5 and not requiring the surreptitious passing of information via a cookie to then be extracted out-of-band on the recipient side with JavaScript.

Could/would someone from A5 please read the other post as well and urge Lenny to finish the exchange?

                      Thanks.
