Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is there any known problem with "Rows of data?"

I am experiencing a strange thing, which I fully recreated from scratch: I have a grid that is populated from a MySQL table. All but one of the fields is a Label and, thus, only one field's value can be changed.

If I create the grid from the ground up, everything works just as expected: I can make changes to the one editable field, which are reflected on the browser when the page is redrawn (from the now altered database values).

However, when I go to the Grid Properties sheet and, under the Layout Options, if I set the Rows of data to "0" (supposedly, I will then see all matching rows), then when I try to update the field, it does not change in the database! I can set this back to 10 and updating works correctly. [I was going to test setting it to something high (i.e. that would exceed the known number of rows of data in my database), but instead of typing 99, I accidentally typed 999 and now the developer GUI is giving me the hourglass (for ten minutes so far!) I'll go to lunch and see if it recovers when I return.]

Perhaps I missed some subtle point or a caveat in the documentation, but this seems strange to me. Could you guys try this at AlphaSoftware? Have you heard about this before?

    Thanks.

OK, it came back and I reset it to 99 and saved, published, and tested. With Rows of data set to 99, the database was updated. The performance seemed quite bad, though, so I'm thinking this sort of "workaround" might not be a long-term solution for me.

    Thanks again.

Would someone from AlphaSoftware please address this?

I haven't used it with MySQL and I'm not sure about actual limits but in version 6 I found that the web components would basically go "TILT" when you tried to show a large number of lines on one page. My recollection is that 100 was slow, 500 was doubtful, and 1000 was almost guaranteed to fail.

I believe that v7 has implemented something new that will allow you to display say 15 lines then automatically prefetch the rest so that the next 15, etc. will appear almost instantly. In version 6 each consecutive fetch took the same amount of time.

It is possible to show thousands of lines fairly quickly if you don't use the web components. I built one app that displayed 9000 records (5200 lines visible in a table and the rest were used to populate some rather large drop-down lookup lists) in about 12-15 seconds with a good cable connection. Note that this resulted in a page size of about 750,000 bytes so a lot of that time was download time.

If you're looking for help from me, I'm not sure I can offer much more than "don't show so many rows at one time." Unfortunately, that just seems to be a fact of life with the web component grids.

In the apps where I've shown lots of lines in a table, the tables were for display only. Any editing was done by clicking another button/link to open a separate form for editing the whole record. You can see my sample site here. (If you use the second login, 000443110, you can see that it displays 43 lines very quickly - click the "All" button on the right side of the Posts Installed form. The 5000+ form is in the Admin section and that isn't available for general viewing. If you really want to see it, contact me off-line.) Setting this up involves a lot of coding and it needs to be specific to your app. I'm sure I could do it but I'm busy with other clients right now and wouldn't be able to get to it for quite awhile.

If you really need the speed, perhaps someone else can tackle it?
