Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

WAS server 3944_3012 not allowing login using FireFox

Since updating the WAS server only edition to 3944_3012, I can no longer access my .a5w pages requiring login and PW access when using FireFox. Using IE everything works just fine but FireFox just stalls and a couple times indicated that "Target page does not exist". I was not able to get a screen shoot of this message as it only occured twice. But the page does exist and the login does work with IE. It used to work with the previous WAS server 3909_3011.

    Anyone else have this problem?

I just tried the sample app that ships with a5 and it works fine in FireFox. The sample web app requires that you be logged in to view pages.

I noticed in the past that IE would find login.a5w even if it was not listed as one of the default pages listed in the WAS configuration, provided the ones that were listed (index.htm, etc.) were not present. But Firefox did not automatically search for login.a5w. Try amending your URL to include the actual login page. If that works, check your WAS configuration screen and make sure your login page is the topmost, or only entry for Default Page.

p.s. my WAS application is upgraded to today's release and does run properly using Firefox.

Unless the installation of this new release changed something in the WAS settings I never touched them but I will check anyway. FireFox was working fine with the previous release and this login, in fact up to 5 minutes before installing it I was on that database with FireFox. Have not had time to revert back to the previous release but will try that Friday. I also have not changed a thing with the database or any of its files!

Try for yourself using Firefox and IE.
            https://performance.hpl.ecu.edu/STRR...ault/login.a5w

            Username = strride
            Password= 2

Not the login scripts used are just about all taken from the examples in the A5 help documentation.

Note: Bill said he got a 404 error with IE. So far I have had not problems with IE.

            Thanks,

            Chuck

Have you tried with SSL disabled? IE and Firefox have some differences in how they handle SSL , but they should otherwise behave the same as far as the login functionality.

Steve I am running two databases that require login. Both have been broken for using FireFox since installing the new release and both work with IE. A link to one is listed in the previous post.

Also, I have never listed Login.a5w as a default in the WAS. The Login.a5w file has always been a redirect (relative path) when linking to a page that required but did not have a correct Username and Password Session Variable set.

                  Lenny-

No I have not but my other databases that do not require a login but still are accessed on the same SSL port work fine with FireFox. It is only the databases that require a login that have now rendered FireFox usless, at least for now.

Also, if I bypass the login by commenting out the requirment in the a5w pages that request a valid login so that I can access the page by its absolute URL, FireFox has no trouble bringing up the page. The login is the only thing stoping FireFox it seems.

Not that it helps, but yes I confirm that your login fails on Firefox and IE. IE gives 404, and Firefox times out.

The WAS I tested here did not have SSL, but give me a moment to remote in and I will update my office server to the latest patch and see what happens. It does have SSL.

Ok, done. My office site https://support.attorneystrust.com, does allow login on IE and Firefox. I have a public key, whereas you have a self-signing SSL key, if that makes any difference.

I too was successful loggoing to Steve's site but not yours Chuck. When I try yours from IE, I get:

                      https://performance.hpl.ecu.edu/STRR...ult/index.html

                      This URL as not found.

From Firefox it just tries forever.

I still suspect a combination of login and SSL. Can you turn SSL off temporarily and see if that enables Firefox to login?

I will definatly look at all that you point me too but I really do not understand why this suddenly has happened. Most of the posts here seem to assume that I have just tried this login and just tried SSL for the first time but as I have said it has been functioning now for 4 months. My other login (one not posted here for a diferent database) has been operational since A5V6. Now suddenly after installing the update for the WAS I cannot login with FireFox.

My point is that I have changed nothing in the coding for the login or for the SSL settings. The only change has been updating the WAS.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Was was out fishing for Striper today so will get to this Friday.

Chuck, I understand that you haven't changed anything other than applying the patch. The problem for me is that I cannot duplicate the problem, so I have no concrete idea what might be the cause of the trouble. Without pinpointing the cause, it is near impossibe to fix. I need your help in narrowing down the condistions that produce the problem so I can duplicate it here on a test system.

And I hope you didn't let the big one get away :)

I understand Lenny and appreicate your help. Before turning off the SSL I wanted to shut the server down, reboot my system and make sure i was testing all the changes from a fresh boot.

I ran into a problem I have never had. The WAS will not shut down or Restart. It says after a couple minutes of thinking about it "Server was not able to shut down, please try again later" Not much info there but thought i should mention it. I am going to force the system shutdown and restart everything. I will post the result login after the reboot and SSL turned off.

                              Chuck

Quick update on the shut down- Used the Exit option to quit the WAS. Got an the following:
"Unhandles Exception. Alpha5 will do a forced termination" dialog.
