Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Email body width - with HTML

Anybody know any tricks to force an HTML e-mail to fit within a specified width?

I have an app where I want to send an HTML e-mail that includes a table (HTML table that is) with a graphic in one cell (colspan=3) and a total of 3 cells across with various groups of data below the graphic.

I did all the development on my own system and sent myself lots of e-mails until I got just what I wanted.

Then I gave it to the customer.....

It turns out that my Netscape mail will "shrink" the HTML e-mail to fit within the width of my screen and to print on one page width. However, apparently Outlook makes no such effort. Whenever an Outlook user gets the e-mail it takes up about 1-1/2 screen widths and also prints out on 1-1/2 page widths - not very pretty!

(By the way, Outlook Express also shrinks it to fit. Hmmm, Outlook Express works; Outlook doesn't. Must be designed by different companies!?)

I tried restricting the width of the table using the "width=" command in the <table> tag but that doesn't seem to be working.

An HTML table cell can never be smaller than its contents. So if your image is say 500 pixels wide and you define the cell as 350 pixels, it will expand to fit the image.

IE has a user preference for shrinking images to fit. I would be surprised if Outlook didn't just embed IE, so this setting may control the reciepient's behavior. If this is on, the image could be scaled down as required in the email reader.

But in any case, I would not depend on the email client doing "the right thing". If this is a case of the image being too big, scale it down yourself before sending it. That is the only way you can guarantee a consistent result across recipients.

      The graphic is defined as <img style="WIDTH: 560px; HEIGHT: 360px" ...>

I would think that 560 pixels should fit even on an 800x600 screen. In fact, it does fit with large white space on either side if the screen is scrolled a bit to the right.

I'll try something smaller and see what happens.

Is that the actual size of the image or are you depending on the rendering engine of the email client to understand the style syntax and do what it should? I would make sure the image itself is the size you want.

The actual width is 384 pixels according to Microsoft Photo Editor!

I'd like to set a specified width in the HTML because I can't rely on the user to always change the photo size.
