Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    DOS Applications Cause Floppy Drive Access

    I was doing a search for DOS based programs trying to access the floppy drive, and came up with this article called, Troubleshooting MS-DOS-based programs in Windows XP.

    It might be helpful for all you Alpha Four users. Here's the link: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;314106

    In the article there was a link with article number 171940 describing DOS based applications trying to access the floppy drive during I/O operations.
    Here's the link for that article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/171940/

    Apparently the WinNT 4.0 service pack 3 update caused the NTVDM subsystem to be updated to keep in synchronization with Win32. So, when the MS-DOS application changes the default drive, Windows NT verifies the current directory for the new default drive. There was a fix from Microsoft at the link above. This also appears to be a problem in WinXP. I doubt there would be a fix for WinXP, but maybe further searching would turn something up.

    A4v7 Cause Floppy Drive Access

    Hi John,

    This problem is an Alpha4 v7 and v8 problem. I run WordPerfect 5.1 from a flash drive every day and have never encountered this problem. I also have a customer that uses Quicken 7 to manage his customer's accounts with none of that floppy drive problem. Both these softwares are executed under win2k or winxp.

    Why do I still use WordPerfect 5.1, could a topic for another post.

    So long for now,

    Charles

      One would expect that installing upgraded software supposedly written for a newer operating system that the upgraded software would run faster - ESPECIALLY if that upgraded software is running on newer and faster computers.

      Ive spent money on computers and upgrades to software, including A4v8, so that we could A) improve our efficiency based on faster access to data over the network, and B) take advantage of the email & fax capabilities offered in A4V8, and C) so that we can upgrade other software to run on WinXP.

      In addition to the money spent, I have invested a great many hours searching for a resolution to and discussing this degraded speed issue related to A4V8. To date, the only thing Ive heard back is to disable the floppy in the bios.

      I decided to test and document the performance of A4V8 on WinXP (with and without the floppy disabled) and A4V6 & A4V8 on Win98. My results are included in an attached PDF file. Here are two key findings

      - Disabling the floppy improves A4V8s performance in WinXP only by 2.5%, negligible at best.

      - It takes A4V8 an averaged total of 216.25 seconds for the loading of 6 of my forms in WinXP while it takes A4V8 only 39.41 seconds to load those same forms in Win98. Thats nearly 5-1/2 times longer loading in WinXP than in Win98)

      {WinXP running on P4 1500mhz 512MB Ram}
      {Win98 running on P3 766mhz 256MB Ram}
      {All testing done over network to same data location}

      I am hopeful that somebody will find a resolution to the problem quickly.

      Mike
      Thank you,
      Mike Konoff
