Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Session Variables on an a5w page

Can anyone tell me the syntax to set up a session variable in a a5w page (or anywhere else for that matter) to be associated to a specific field on the grid. For example, I have a a5w login page with grid. Within the grid i have a field called user_id. I basically want to create a session variable relating to the user_id field.

    Is it

    session.user_id

    Thanks

On your login dialog you can set the control to tbe Local or Session. If you set it to session, then session.user_id will contain the value your user entered on the dialog, after pressing submit. You can then reference that variable as session.user_id within your application.

You can always test the contents by adding ? session.user_id to an a5w page and display that page.

You can manually create and set a session variable at anytime by saying session.myvar = "something".

session variables exist until your session ends, even if you close the browser. You can remove your session variables with session.reset(). This actually removes the session varaible -- it is not just set to a blank or null value.

Because of the above, the proper way to address a session variable is:

    if eval_valid("session.myvar") then
...what to do if it exists
    else
...what to do if it does not exist.
    end

This deals with if the session has timed out and the session

      Hi Steve,

      I have set the login dialog control to Session and i now get the following error on my a5w page;

Errors in: event.Form Level Validate code:
      Variable "User_Name" not found.

      Any ideas?

When you create a dialog and add a control, one of the properties is Scope. Set the scope to Session.

Now, when you do this, you also have to alter any code in your Events to refer to this variable including the word session.

        That is, user_id becomes session.user_id.

Referring to your private message, could you explain more what you mean by the first sentence of this paragraph:

My biggest problem is trying to understand how i can refer to a field on a grid within an a5w page using a session variable. I have seen that variables can be created at the table design time using the V button. All i want to do then is

if password ok... open new page....

On the new page should be a button which when pressed opens another page with the filtered details based on the user_name.
p.s. I appreciate the private email, but its better to keep the discussion up on the forum so everyone can benefit.

          Session Variables

          Steve,

Ok no probs, your right sorry :-(

I have tried your advise, and so far so good.

Now after the user has logged in, another page opens (main_menu.a5w) and is displaying standard HTML buttons. I need to put some functionality onto the buttons so that when one is pressed another page opens containing a standard grid on the items table and filters based on the user_name.
