Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    XDialog ListBox Question

    Hello,

    I am trying to create an xdialog box that will display records from an ADO connected Database. On one of the columns I want to limit the available choices to one of three options. When I use Genie and tell it to make the column for this field a listbox, I am never getting the option to setup the allowed choices for this column and when I run the dialog box this column appears to be non existent. I have been able to programmatically add choices that display on the screen but they have no effect on the data in the table.

    An example of the control definition that displays and update the column I am working with is this: (the column I am working with is highlighted in red)

    AdoForm.ControlDefinitions = <<%string%
    ~DataObj1.EntityID~|||[4.7DataObj1.Row[__i__\].Data.Display.EntityID!DataObj1.Data.EntityID_change]
    ~DataObj1.Name~|||[-1.2DataObj1.Row[__i__\].Data.Display.Name!DataObj1.Data.Name_change]
    ~DataObj1.Type~|||[-1.2DataObj1.Row[__i__\].Data.Display.Type!DataObj1.Data.Type_change]
    ~DataObj1.EntityID_label~|||<%B=N;O={J=L,C}{F=__font__}EntityID;OF={J=C,C}{F=__font__,U}EntityID%!DataObj1.Label.EntityID>
    ~DataObj1.Name_label~|||<%B=N;O={J=L,C}{F=__font__}Name;OF={J=C,C}{F=__font__,U}Name%!DataObj1.Label.Name>
    ~DataObj1.Type_label~|||<%B=N;O={J=L,C}{F=__font__}Type;OF={J=C,C}{F=__font__,U}Type%!DataObj1.Label.Type>
    ~DataObj1_First~|||<%T=First record;B=T;I=$a5_record_first%!DataObj1.Event.First?DataObj1.flag.First>
    ~DataObj1_Previous~|||<%T=Previous record;B=T;I=$a5_record_previous%!DataObj1.Event.Prev?DataObj1.flag.Prev>
    ~DataObj1_Next~|||<%T=Next record;B=T;I=$a5_record_next%!DataObj1.Event.Next?DataObj1.flag.Next>
    ~DataObj1_Last~|||<%T=Last record;B=T;I=$a5_record_last%!DataObj1.Event.Last?DataObj1.flag.Last>
    %string%

    An example of where I can get the listbox to show is this:

    AdoForm.ControlDefinitions = <<%string%
    ~DataObj1.EntityID~|||[4.7DataObj1.Row[__i__\].Data.Display.EntityID!DataObj1.Data.EntityID_change]
    ~DataObj1.Name~|||[-1.2DataObj1.Row[__i__\].Data.Display.Name!DataObj1.Data.Name_change]
    ~DataObj1.Type~|||[%v%.10test^=a_test]
    ~DataObj1.EntityID_label~|||<%B=N;O={J=L,C}{F=__font__}EntityID;OF={J=C,C}{F=__font__,U}EntityID%!DataObj1.Label.EntityID>
    ~DataObj1.Name_label~|||<%B=N;O={J=L,C}{F=__font__}Name;OF={J=C,C}{F=__font__,U}Name%!DataObj1.Label.Name>
    ~DataObj1.Type_label~|||<%B=N;O={J=L,C}{F=__font__}Type;OF={J=C,C}{F=__font__,U}Type%!DataObj1.Label.Type>
    ~DataObj1_First~|||<%T=First record;B=T;I=$a5_record_first%!DataObj1.Event.First?DataObj1.flag.First>
    ~DataObj1_Previous~|||<%T=Previous record;B=T;I=$a5_record_previous%!DataObj1.Event.Prev?DataObj1.flag.Prev>
    ~DataObj1_Next~|||<%T=Next record;B=T;I=$a5_record_next%!DataObj1.Event.Next?DataObj1.flag.Next>
    ~DataObj1_Last~|||<%T=Last record;B=T;I=$a5_record_last%!DataObj1.Event.Last?DataObj1.flag.Last>
    %string%

    What I would like to do is find a way to combine the field information for the two fields that are displayed in red into one field. Is this possible?

    I hope that someone will have some ideas.

    Thanks in advance.

          Yes I should have posted information about what I had found on Friday afternoon, it just got to be late in the day and other stuff was coming up for me.

          What I was able to find in the Xdialog reference manual that did work the way that I wanted it to was on the line that is highlighted in red with the following line.

          ~DataObj1.Type~|||[%v%.10DataObj1.Row[__i__\].Data.Display.Type^=a_test!DataObj1.Data.Type_change]

          This gave me the ability of define the list of options and still have the results affect the database data. I found information that explains this in the xdialog reference under the "Combo Box Control Syntax" section.
