Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    USER or ADMIN LOGIN ?

    Is there any other way of achieving this.

    I simply wish to have two login states;

    I have a table containing

    USER_NAME
    PASSWORD
    ACCESS_CODE
    USER TYPE (ADMIN/USER) or (TRUE or FALSE)

    I have got the user_name / password / access_code to work, but this always open the same page.

    See below;

    VALIDATE
    Code:
    if (session.User_Name="") .or. (Password="") .or. (Access_Code="") then
    currentform.has_error=.t.
    currentform.error_message="User Name, Password or Access Code cannot be blank."
    else
    dim correct_password as C
    correct_password=lookup("<ABD_Path>\contacts", "User_Name="+quote(session.User_Name), "password")
    if (correct_password<>password) then
    currentform.has_error=.t.
    currentform.error_message="Invalid User Name or Password"
    end if
    dim correct_access_code as C
    correct_access_code=lookup("<ADB_Path>\contacts","User_Name="+quote(session.User_Name), "access_code")
    if (correct_access_code<>access_code) then
    currentform.has_error=.t.
    currentform.error_message="Invalid Access Code"
    end if
    end if
    AFTER VALIDATE

    Code:
    session.vcompany_id=lookup("<ABD_Path>\contacts", "User_Name="+quote(session.User_Name), "company_id")
    session.vtitle=lookup("<ADB_Path>\contacts", "User_Name="+quote(session.User_Name), "title")
    session.vfirst_name=lookup("<ADB_Path>\contacts", "User_Name="+quote(session.User_Name), "first_name")
    session.vlast_name=lookup("<ADB_Path>\contacts", "User_Name="+quote(session.User_Name), "last_name")
    if eval_valid("session.targetUrl") then
    if session.targetURL <> "" then
    Currentform.RedirectTarget=session.targetURL
    else
    currentform.redirectTarget = "main_menu.a5w"
    end if
    else
    currentform.redirecttarget="main_menu.a5w"
    end if
    session.__protected__flagisloggedin = .t.

    Can i redirect the page based on the value below;

    1. ADMIN
    2. USER

    If admin is true then open page 1
    If admin is false then open page 2

    or

    If admin open page 1
    If user open page 2

    Any support on this one is really appreciated.

    You should be able to test for the value that tells you if the user is admin. Just construct an if statement and redirect to the appropriate page based on this value.

        There is an example right at the bottom, below your AfterValidate code window:

        For example:

        If Condition1 = .t. Then
        CurrentForm.RedirectTarget = "Page1.a5w"
        Else
        CurrentForm.RedirectTarget = "Page2.a5w"
        End If

          Condition

          Thanks Steve. Do i need to use lookup to verify if ADMIN or USER. Or do you perhaps have another option. Examples are most welcome. Thanks.

            I guess so, in the same way you lookup your contact values, do session.vlast_name=lookup("<ADB_Path>\contacts", "User_Name="+quote(session.User_Name), "access_level"), and then use that in your IF-THEN statement. You might look at Alpha's concept for Security Levels and make Users=1 and Admin=5 (example) and then toggle your page redirect on that. The security levels can be used in Navigation and grids to selectively show/hide information from visitors based on their security level. For example if a Demo user visits my site, they see everything on the menu, but the price list is hidden.

              I tried the following but didnt seem to work. Any ideas?

              Code:
              session.vuser_type=lookup("<ADB_Path>\contacts", "User_Name="+quote(session.User_Name), "user_type")

              if eval_valid(session.vuser_type="ADMIN").t. then
              	CurrentForm.RedirectTarget = "ADMIN.a5w"
              else if eval_valid(session.vuser_type="USER").t. then
              	CurrentForm.RedirectTarget = "USER.a5w"
              end if
              Thanks

                eval_valid() is not used to check the contents of a variable, it checks that the expression is a valid statement. Its used in this context to see if the variable exists. I'd also do it more like below, with the ELSE and ALLTRIM. The ELSE ensures that if they are not Admin, they are a User. Minor point, always make your filenames in lower case, as in 'admin.a5w' both in code and in the control panel - URL's are case sensitive and everyone expects lower case.

                Code:
                if eval_valid("session.vuser_type") then
                 if alltrim(session.vuser_type) = "ADMIN"
                 CurrentForm.RedirectTarget = "admin.a5w"
                else
                 CurrentForm.RedirectTarget = "user.a5w"
                 end if
                end if

                  Thanks Steve, I have taken the character set advise onboard. Meanwhile, I added your code to my After Validate code. The result is, after the user name, password and access code is entered. Nothing happens, it seems to loop back to the login screen..... i have pasted the AFTER VALIDATE code below. What do you think. (sorry, i dont know how to put it in a lovely blue box yet!).

                  Code:
                  session.vuser_type_name=lookup("<ADB_Path>\user_names", "user_name="+quote(session.user_name), "user_type")
                  if eval_valid("session.targetUrl") then
                      if session.targetURL <> "" then
                          Currentform.RedirectTarget=session.targetURL
                      else
                  if eval_valid("session.vuser_type") then
                  	if alltrim(session.vuser_type) = "admin"
                   		CurrentForm.RedirectTarget = "admin.a5w"
                  else
                   		CurrentForm.RedirectTarget = "user.a5w"
                  session.__protected__flagisloggedin = .t
                  end if
                  end if
                  end if
                  end if

                    All I can throw back is some general ideas for testing your code.

                    1) For testing, slip in a:

                    response.redirect("mytestpage.a5w")
                    end

                    ...just after you set the vuser_type variable and have the mytestpage.a5w show the value of that variable, using ? session.vuser_type_name. That will confirm what value you are getting from your lookup.

                    2) Temporarily take out any code in your admin.a5w and user page such as a5w_include("logintest.a5w"). That diverts non-logged in users back to the login.

                    3) Try commenting out the line: Currentform.RedirectTarget=session.targetURL to see if your page is being redirected because session.targetURL does contain a value and is redirecting the page there.

                            Jerry, the tread you are pointing to does not cover opening different pages at login time. It basically assists with getting the security levels to work once you are on an a5w page based on your level. But thanks for the input.

                              I have gone through your options and am not sure (but learning fast) where the following code should be placed to work.

                              Code:
                              response.redirect("mytestpage.a5w")
                              end
                              Code:
                              session.vcompany_id=lookup("<ABD_Path>\contacts", "User_Name="+quote(User_Name), "company_id")
                              session.vfirst_name=lookup("<ADB_Path>\contacts", "User_Name="+quote(User_Name), "first_name")
                              session.vlast_name=lookup("<ADB_Path>\contacts", "User_Name="+quote(User_Name), "last_name")

                              if eval_valid("session.targetUrl") then
                                  if session.targetURL <> "" then
                                      Currentform.RedirectTarget=session.targetURL
                                  else
                              if eval_valid("session.vuser_type") then
                              	if alltrim(session.vuser_type) = "admin"
                               		CurrentForm.RedirectTarget = "admin.a5w"
                              else
                               		CurrentForm.RedirectTarget = "user.a5w"
                              session.__protected__flagisloggedin = .t
                              end if
                              end if
                              end if
                              end if
                              Jerry, by the way, your link to is focused on Security Levels not redirecting pages at login time, but thanks for the input. I have managed to sort out the security levels. Now just need to work out how to open different pages based on the user_type.
