Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

ADO Import Genie not work with Excel

I don't often import stuff, but had readon to use the ADO import genie to import an Excel spreadsheet (version unknown but probably 02, I don't use Excel so am not very familiar with the versions). I could not get it to work.
I found the import genie unnecessarily cumbersome and confusing, and in the end did not work. Apparently it was not able to read the excel fields. The old import was a lot easier.
I am wondering what success others have had with the import genie? I don't really have much time to dwell on this, and was able to do the import through other means but if this is an issue that others are having I think it is something Alpha should take a look at.
As far as I could tell I had the genie fields set up correctly. It asks for the excel spreadsheet and then also asks for the source table, which should be the same thing I guess, seems odd to me, and just generates and error no matter what I put in.

Did you look at the instructions in the help?

Instructions? Oh yeah, I forgot, if all else fails FTFM.

Ed, No I admit I didn't, and I will when I get the chance. What I needed at the time though was a quick and simple way to get the Excel file in. While I would have probably been better served by reading up on it, I didn't want to take the time. (I understand the illogic of that)

Since I was able to get the file in by other methods it didn't matter ultimately, but the point is that the genie dialog I think should be somewhat intuitive, which I didn't find. I will certainly take the blame for not doing my homework, but was curious if others found this to be cumbersome also. I'll try to get the time to read the manual and see if it works better.

      Thanks for the quick reply.

I just finished a project where the client has to import numerous excel files... i found the import to be painless.

steps you might want to take when setting up the import (using the genie is pretty easy IMO)

        1) Choose TABLE first from the ADO import genie, then if you need to perform more specific functions on it, once you have chose the fields you want to use, switch to SQL, and it will translate the import code to a SQL SELECT statement... this is very usefull as you can use the normal SQL syntax, like distinct and where x = x, etc.

Also, you can preview the data, to make sure it will import the correct records from excel.

Once you can run the import successfully, you can check the table structure to see what of which type the data has been imported.

I have had some issues with Date and Time cells in excel being imported as exponentnumeric for some reason, as well as some number fields being imported as characters... though this was ultimately formatting issues in excel itself.

        hope this helps a little.

          V7 improvement

          Russ,
I agree with Dave. I had problems with v6 import of files, but v7 has been a gem. You just have to make sure to fill all the needed import genie fields.

I have finally had a chance to look with this. I created an.xls filed (using Quattro Pro, saved as xls). This went through the ADO import with no problems.
The other Excel file I tried to import only generated errors.

Can an Excel file be locked to prevent import? That's all I can think of. I can't post the problem file as it is not data that can be posted. The problem was taken care of so it's not a big issue.
