Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Delete Column?

I imported a few fields I don't want. E.g., country is US. No need for that, b/c that's true of all records. How can I delete it? Thanks!

Open the table structure and delete the fields.

Roy, you could restructure the table by deleting the fields you don't need. Help is available under the index topic "Table", subindex "Restructure".

Or can you rerun the import and tell it not to import the fields that you don't want?

          can't save changes

Thank you, everyone. It is easy to just open that table structure in design view and delete. But I am getting a message that I cannot open the program in exclusive mode and my changes are not being saved. It's just me and I closed and re-opened, but same message. What's the problem with this?

Assuming that you don't have another object(form, browse, report, code) that has the table open, you may have to close Alpha and restart. At worst a system reboot will clear the problem - sometimes it's something other than Alpha.

From the control panel, chose file - database information and you will see the open tables. It doesn't tell what has it open, but at least you know.

The delete function held when I deleted a column. The renaming of columns does not stick though. However, I am not getting any message to that effect - it just goes back to "Field1" when the table is re-opened.

                language

                Dear Roy,

You are using the term "column". The respondants have been translating this to a table 'field'. I'm sensing some disconnect here. When you are saying 'delete function held when I deleted a column'... What does deleting a column and renaming a column mean to you? The standard language when refering to a table is 'field' not 'columns', but this can get mixed up if the reference is to embedded browses. The language is key to getting your points/thoughts across.

                  clarification

To clarify, I mean that when I look at the fields in a datasheet view the name at the top of each column of fields is simply "field1", "field2", etc. When I view the table structure through - I think it is the "object browser" - then I can find what appears to be a tree of attributes for each field. One is entitled column="" or something similar. When I input a name, e.g., "Name", this shows up when I once again view the data in columnar fashion through a datasheet view. But when I close the table and re-open . . . back to "field1", field2", etc.

                    Roy, that helps.

You're modifying the browse layout through which the records are being displayed. This does not change the actual field names in the structure of the table.

Suggest you read the Help file sections I referred to you earlier. Then compare those with the Help file sections on modifying browse layouts.
