Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Run WAS as service

    Alan,

But do you need to use their "helpful" tools in order to use the dedicated server, or do you have complete remote control?

      Re: Run WAS as service

You have complete control. Your use Remote Desktop and get right to it.
You can install anything, shut down anything, and do whatever.
Firedaemon is needed because when you log off of Remote Desktop, the process would stop, but any processes that are running as services will continue just fine.
I use mailenable for my email, and bulletproof ftp for my ftp server since I'm not using IIS.

        Re: Run WAS as service

Ok, guys, really dumb questions alert:

Do you think that WAS can't be run from ANY VPS or just from GoDaddy's?

All I want to do is let the field personnel have access to our data via the web. I have a WAS license, and the hosting company I'm looking into right now (ApolloHosting) says I will have "total root access" and can "run any program." What questions should I ask their sales department so that I can tell for sure whether or not WAS will run?

Thanks for all the advice & help. I'm in way over my head on this....

I don't know any specific questions to ask them other than ask for a money back guarantee that you can make it work.

              Re: Run WAS as service

I understand v8WAS does not yet run as a service, I'm expecting it will not. To me it no longer matters since my run-as-a-service utility is working fine.

About some of the posts in this thread:

I've found a run-as-a-service utility I like better than FireDaemon. It will automatically restarts the WAS if it hogs the CPU or RAM hits some threshold. I can also restart it every day at a particular hour, or check it every 30 minutes, and restart under certain conditions. It sends me a friendly email every midnight saying "everything is running fine here", or immediately contacts me if the server reboots, WAS restarts unexpectedly, etc. IT ALSO SHOWS THE WAS CONFIG ICON in the System Tray, which FireDaemon does not do. I'll post a review in a few days; I've got some more testing to do.

FireDaemon ran real slow on my VDS, so I replaced it with this other service.

Alpha WAS runs fine on a Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS). I have five applications running in that environment now. A VDS is just like having a dedicated server, except you are really sharing hardware with 10-20 other guys. But you are 100% isolated, can reboot, etc. If you are just running WAS, you don't need any of those tools they tend to provide like Plesk, or even IIS.

I also use BulletProofFTP and MailEnable, which were mentioned below.

GoDaddy's VDS offering looks just like the others, don't see why WAS would not run there. I bet it has the same problem with FireDaemon I mentioned above. I also agree that GoDaddy is really too difficult to navigate; you get lost in all of the 'help' they provide.
