Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Embedded browse won't display child records

I have a tabbed form based on a set. I placed a button on the 1st tab which finds a single record, using a variable generated by the List View Genie. The related fields are displayed on another tab, where I have placed an embedded browse to a one-to-many child. The link and the variable are all based on the same 20-character field name, which is calculated in the parent (using an expression in the Set design) but not calculated in the child. Since the browse won't display any records, I guess it doesn't like the variable as a link, so is there a way to make it work? I can open a separate similar browse using a filter expression, but I need it to be embedded. I sure appreciate the help this forum provides.

Have you tried opening the default form to see if it will display there. If there are too many fields for the default form, make a simple form with the browse embedded and see if it will open there. If the linking expression is correct, you should see the child records.

Ohlen: an imbedded browse reacts the same way; no existing child records are displayed, and new records cannot be entered because the browse doesn't "see" the link.

John, what does that mean? Are you saying the 20 character field does not exist in each child table record?

Adding to what Tom asked: As I understand an embedded browse it displays the records in a child table that are related to the parent record by a linking field or expression in the set definition. Fields must exist within the parent and child that evaluate to the expression. Within that definition, you can further filter the child records shown. It doesn't sound like you've got the link defined properly. It sounds like know what you want to see but that won't create a valid link. Perhaps you could attach a sample of what you're attempting so others can take a look.

Yes, the 20-character linking field does exist in every child table record. I designed the set as Ohlen described above. The field in the parent table is calculated by combining 3 fields that total 20 characters (the same length as the linking field in the child). I specified 20 characters just in case it mattered. In any event, I have now tried changing the set design using the calculated field (rather than the equivalent expression) as the primary table linking field, and all is well. This would appear to be contrary to proper set design, but it works. I can now also open a form by double-clicking on a browse detail row. So, for the moment, I'm a happy camper. Thank you both for your assistance.

Perhaps there was an error in the calc field which created the 20 character long link expression for the parent table? I've understood that the parent table link can be an expression including two or more table fields, but the child table link must be a single field containing the combined link value. -- tom
