Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Zoom to Record Question

    Hi:
I have an interesting problem (I think). I have a set made up of 1-1-1 for three files (event - athlete - performance). I have a browse on a form that lists an athlete, the event he participates in and the performance. Thus, one athlete may be listed from 1-4+ times in the browse credited with performances marks in different events (100, 200, etc). Although listed multiple times, the same record# is listed for the athlete each time he appears on the browse.

Here is my problem. If I try to create a Zoom to Record using the athlete id#, Alpha is unable to go to the record I have focus on. Thus, if John Brown is listed in the 100 meters with a time of 10.67 and is also listed in for the 200 meters with a time of 21.84, and I double click on the 100 meter listing within the browse, the Zoom to Record fails to open the dialog form for this record. It selects another record (although in a few rare cases, it does select the right record). If I try using the event id# as my focus, I get "No records in query.

I hope I have provided a clear picture for you to follow. Is there a way to work around this and use the on row double click operation to open the dialog form for the record I have as focus? I tried using Action Scripting and "Open Form/Browse Layout", but that brought me the same results when I used the "Records that Match the value" filter.

    Thanks,

    Pete,

When you say "the same record# is listed for the athlete each time he appears in the browse" do you really mean to say the same "athlete id#" is listed for the athlete... ?

Can you set a variable to equal the event when you give focus to the line in the browse? then use that variable and athlete Id to find the right record? Just a thought.

You should consider having a unique identifier for each record and use that to zoom with.

Also the performance should be based on a combination of the athlete and the event to match them properly..

Thanks to all for replying. I will not be able to go back to my database until later today or this weekend, but will try and post a sample tonight rather than verbally try and explain my issue. I am not sure if I am using poor database design (poor meet management in my world) or just explaining incorrectly. I will try and create a sample database that will show what I want to do.

Sorry for not having done that initially. I must learn not to try and resolve issues late at night. :)

          Thanks again for your suggestions.

            Quick turnaround

I was able to create the sample a lot quicker than I thought. If you go into the forms and click on the ListView and then double click on a record you will see that I can't get to the Athlete Form for the record clicked.

Again, I may just be not be using very good database design, so any suggestion in sending me in the right direction would be helpful.

            Thanks again,

              A. Instead of a zoom, use the open form with options shown in the image attached to open the athlete form.

              B. Another option would be to have 3 tables. Events, Athletes, Marks. Then have a set with Events => Marks -> Athletes => Marks
You can then have a form that shows each event with the athletes in that event showing in a browse. Another browse would show each event that the athlete in browse1 was in.

You'll actually like B better, because you don't have to jump from one form to another....

                Thanks, Al.

                Al:
I tried your version A at least 5 times over the last couple of days without success. I did it again tonight and it worked. I will look back at some of my backups and see where I went wrong. I will also try your second approach, one that I have not tried and would not have even thought of, that of combining 1 to 1 with 1 to many and then back to 1 to 1. I am sure I will find that very interesting.

Thanks to all again for your response and suggestions. I keep hoping I can take these darn training wheels off pretty soon. Tomorrow I am going up to Burlington to pick up Dr. Wayne's new book. :)
