Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid fetch speed

Doing testing on my first app. After reading posts here I can't tell if this is slow.

Only thing on a page is read only grid component showing 1 record at a time of a local dbf table, no search, no detail view, no column sorting. It takes 3 seconds to fetch a record from localhost. table has 600 records. Displaying 5 of 25 fields.

The real data (same size) is SQL Server 2K. Same style grid component to remote server takes 5 sec to fetch a record. A simple grid linker with remote SQL table linked to local dbf table takes 10-12 sec. to fetch.

Since there is really nothing on the pages is this about as fast as I can expect or might there be other settings I should turn off?

    Bill.

You cannot use Local Host as a guide.

I have very good speed using Alpha5Online with thousands of records and complex forms and grids. Don't go turning anything off just yet - go live, then review.

Bill, what does "remote SQL table linked to local dbf table" mean? And, is one of these tests using a tabbed gridlinker? Those are inheritenly slow. My server is Win2003 with native DBF files, about 25,000 records, always filtered. Average display time is about 4 seconds.

The remote/local is just that. The SQL server table is on a remote web server, linked to a dbf table on my desktop machine. Not using any tabbed grid linkers. Two tests were with grids and one with a grid linker. From the default grid component configuration, I dropped back to displaying only 1 row at a time. I was just trying to use the bare minimum since initial performance seemed slow.

I was trying dbf tables and SQL Server tables, separately, to see if there was much difference. It seems there is not much difference.

This all came up because an ASP app I have against an MDB is significantly faster, <1 sec to display a page. I know there is a performance penalty when using components. I was just a bit surprised that running localhost against all local data was not lightning fast.

        Bill.

View local host as an emulator only

View local host as an emulator only. It is much slower than the real thing.

              My observation anyway

My observation anyway - someone else may have a different view - but if you think about it - how is my little Laptop with tons of stuff running, going to be as good as a full-on server environment - any local pc for that matter.
