Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Memory Leak ?

As a beginer, I am going between "design" and "execute" (just run the database, not run, just double click) a LOT.

Similar with Opening and closing the "Print Preview" Window a lot.

Make an edit, preview, change, preview, change, preview...

    You get the idea...

What I have noticed is I only get about 10-15 of these cycles before things start to slow down, and fields start dissapearing... especially bitmaps...

Sounds like a Memery leak...is this known...or am I missings something else...

I too am running into this problem, looks like the userinterface repaints itself at a resource cost. I have just about tried everything and in my case will have to redesign my application so that the forms load prior to need and they simply are shown or hidden. Seems like alpha gives us great features such as conditional objects, tab forms and conditional forms that are best used only for very generic design. I cannot believe that I am resorting to using the same design techniques I was using in Version 4.5

      Willard & Rsisson.

When developing & making constant changes, try compacting the database frequently. This will likely cure the problem.

After compacting observe the size of your application. When things start slowing down again observe the app size. You will probably find it has grown significantly in size. Consider compacting like defrag +. Gets rid of the old code & reorganizes everything.

        Compacting and Defraging the Ap?

Ok, I saw the "pack" function, but I thought that was for the DATA...

Is there a "cleanup" function for the CODE as well?

Where are these functions, I don't remember seeing them?

Willard, could you elaborate a bit.

Bob, the "compact database" IS the cleanup tool. From File-Database Compact

This is not the problem John,
This is an ongoing problem with Alpha since 1900 (or at least it seems that long)
It is a problem with the basic form. Tabbed forms, conditional objects bleed through, Conditional forms and browses do not react dependably with repainting itself and even embedded browses have a hard time keeping records in any sort of order (there are times the last record appears at the end of the browse twice when the browse is read only.)

I will say that the introduction of Xdialog Is the strength of Alpha, I believe all applicaitons should be designed exclusively using a combination of Xdialog and Embedded activeX (dhtml and/or browser). FASTER THAN ANY OTHER.

The more professional and creative you wish to become in development, the need for Xdialog increases.
Since there are tremendous speed improvements reading/writing to text files, there is no need to switch to the newer and somewhat better dbf formats. Hence:
I BELIEVE ALPHA5 IS THE DINOSAUR AND XDIALOG IS THE FUTURE

I share your comments about bleed through (occassionaly), & embedded sort not sorting correctly.

As much as I get frustrated when this happens, I have to temper it with the ease of development for the non progranner (ME). I suspect that in trying to do everything, for everbody, without coding, things sometimes fall through the cracks. I, like everyone else (assumption), have encountered what appear to be bugs or anomolies (politically correct term). A couple of these have claimed what little hair I had.

When I'm ready to give up, I remind myself that I couldn't have got this far with any other product. Something like a marriage, you hope the good outways the bad.

                John,
I was not complaining, simply reiterating common anomalies found in the Alpha interface "DONE" with the hopes of saving a new user many wasted hours (where the user plans a nice application and after coding and designing specific application, he finds that he cannot use many of the thought to be reliable interface methods -- tab forms, conditional forms etc etc etc. . . )

I have been designing application for close to 10 years now and I still fall into this category. - - -How Sad.

Willard, I have a raft of apps that use tabbed objects and conditional objects, some that run 24/7 - all are working just fine. Where are you having problems? Could you post an example?

in V7, you can use the tab refresh to deal with problems, too.
