Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Corrupt Components

A print script stopped working on a published application. I used my FTP to download the published version and overwrote the original version. Now it's telling me that I'm trying to change a published component and the current is corrupt. How do I recover these corrupt files that all are working on the web, except the print routine that stopped for some reason?

The publishing process irreversibly transforms a component so that it can no longer be edited with the component builders. You need to keep an unpublished version of the component available.

      Component Corruption

Is there somewhere in the documentation that indicates this information. Seems that this is extremely critical. Fortuantely for me I have a backup elsewhere of this application, otherwise I would have inadvertantly destroyed a lot of work. Guess I just overlooked the warning on this somewhere. Thanks.

        Same problem

Yes I found this out months ago. It does not seems correct to have two files named the same, when they are not the same file. This not only happens with the upload file, but also when you use local host, a copy of the file is created as if it is the WAS file and run from (and stored) on your local system. My experience is if you use the Web Control Panel>A5W Pages>Edit> don't use this panel from the A5menu in the background, you increase your chances of destroying (or erasing) your Web Component file massively in my view, somthing does very wrong.

          Pete,

I have read your post several times and I still don't understand it. What is the risk of editing A5W pages?

As for the components changing when they are published, that is what aliases are all about. To resolve aliases into actual paths when the components are published.

Peter, the bug you describe that was deleting components has been fixed.

I'm interested that you say this bug is fixed. I was up to 3am at the weekend rebuilding components that were deleted during an upload. I'm running the latest version (3018) of Alpha, so am I missing something here?

I'm sorry for the confusion, the patch with that fix has not yet been released. It should be coming out shortly.

I'm glad to hear it's fixed.

I'm also glad to hear I was not going nuts - I'm looking forward to the next release. - Thanks, Peter.
