Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Trigger another Event from an event

    Hello,

I have created an XDialog box that has a button placed on the box that is used to look up some information. When the button is triggered the user is being presented with some information and will make a choice. The information the user chooses is then placed in a text field on a form. The text field has an On_change event that fire if the user enters information in this field, but it is currently not being executed when the button is pressed and I populate this field from another event.

I have looked in the XDialog reference but I have not found what I am looking for yet. Is there a way to trigger an event on another field from the event of a field in an xDialog box.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Eric,

For type-in fields, the OnChange event fires when the control looses focus. For radio button, two-state button, multi-state button, and list box fields, the OnChange event fires as soon as the fields value changes.

You can add code to set focus to the field object in the tab order after the field you are populating via xdialog, this might possibly cause the OnChange event of your field to 'fire' as it should then lose focus.

Since the CanDepart Event fires just before the field looses focus, you might try to place your OnChange code for the field to the CanDepart event (I am not sure if this would work).

I have not tested either of these, but they seem like they might give you alternatives.

Let us know what you end up with.

    Good luck

      Eric,

I have not tested this but I would try the following. Transfer the code that is currently in the form field OnChange event into a global script. (Contol panel-code tab-new-script) Then put a play script command in the event to run the code. In the code section of the xDialog also add a run script command. You could put it with the logic that populates the field so it runs as soon as the field changes or put it together with the closing of the dialog logic so it runs when the dialog closes.

Hope this is of some help.

        Eric,

I am a bit confused as to where your looking to have this "OnChange" event fire. Is it on a form or a XDialog?

Do you have a form with a text field AND a modeless XDialog box with a button on it which looks up the data to place in the forms text field?

        -or-

Do you have a XDialog that has a text field AND a button to which looks up the data also on the XDialog?

Is the button opening another form, or another dialog?

Does the XDialog close when the user makes a selection?

More info will help me answer your question.

          Figured Out What I needed

          Hello everybody,

Thanks for the help that you provided. Thanks to the input that was provided I was able to figure what I needed to do. In looking at what I am trying to do I really did not need to need to run the whole _changed event. All that I really needed to do was to set the dirty flag = .t. and that gave me the behavior I was looking for but the suggestions that were given did point in the direction that I was able to figure this out.

          Thanks for the help
