Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Scripts not found when starting application

    I am using XP SR1 and Alpha4v7.

    I have looked at other threads and cannot find a solution that solves my problem.

    I created a shortcut for my application with "alpha_start2.bat" on the command line.

    I modified the "BAT" file to load my application and set the script path.

    ie.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    a4v7.exe -a#c:\teletrac\tel.app -s#d:\alpha4v7\tel4.scp
    rem There is no need to stop Winagent when exiting A4 because winagent.exe takes up so little memory.
    rem However, if you do want to stop Winagent when exiting from A4, uncomment the following line.
    rem start winagent "command=quit"

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The Application loads fine but I get an error message that the "Tel4 .scp " could not be found"
    When the application starts it automatically plays the script library "Tel4.scp".
    I also set the script path in the Application start up parameters to the same path as in the BAT file.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks Robert
    Are you sure you want to use the -S option and not the -D switch? The S runs the specified script and the D sets the script path. If you already have the script setup to run as part of the application startup you should only need to set the script path. Reference the user guide page 25-11.
      Hi Dave
      Tried your suggestion. NO JOY.
      This application was created in A4V4 many years ago. Ran fine in Win98. But now the client has upgraded to XP.
      Now using A4V7 the application will not find the script at startup. Thing is if I back out of the APP to the A4 main menu and invoke ALT-F4 it sees the script library and I can play it.
      For some reason the Script is not being seen when I try to start it from the application.
      This is the startup macro that worked fine in V4 under Win98
      {screenoff}
      {ONKEY"{F10}",{}}
      {PLAY"TEL4"}
      {set%break,"1"}
      {set%CHAT,""}
      {set%dos,""}
      {*continuesloadingapplication*}
      {show"scrnload"}
      {SCREENON}
      Path is set to A4V7 directory.
      This was not working so I have been trying all the suggestions I could find in related threads on the board but nothing is working.
        Just confirming, your application is on the "C" drive and the scripts are on the "D" drive?
        In your first post you state the script path is "D:\alpha4v7\" and in the second you state "A4V7". Were you abbreviating or is that the actual path?
        Also, where is your program, data and private directories?
        Is this a single user or multiuser version?
          Hi David
          Yes, App is on "C" and scripts on "D"
          As for the path just a typos on my post.
          I have tried having my scripts and application in the Data directory and also running the scripts from the A4V4 directory.
          Its a single user version.
            Hi Robert,
            I'm not sure I have a full picture of what's going on, but I think the problem is that the script path may never really be set, so Alpha is defaulting to the directory you start Alpha from.
            You state the script path is set to the A4V7 directory, where and how is this done?
            Where(what directory/folder) is your batch file and are you starting it with a shortcut? The shortcut properties also have cmd line as well as a working directory.
            From the user Guide pg 25-9:
            Scripts Directory
            This is the directory in which Alpha Four stores scripts.
            Unless you specifically set the Scripts directory with a command line option when you start Alpha Four (using the –D#path switch), the Scripts directory is initially set to be the same as the Private directory (i.e., the directory from which Alpha Four was started). Once Alpha Four has been started, you can change the Scripts directory by choosing ALT-F3 (Scripts) and selecting the Set script path command. Also, when you design an Application, you can define the Scripts directory used by that Application.
            I'm also confused, your batch file command line runs the script Tel4.scp with the -S switch and you also play that same script in the startup macro which I assume is specified in the Application Paramerter setup screen with the {PLAY "TEL4"} command. It appears you may be running it twice.
            You could omit the -S & -D switches from the batch command line and enter them both in the Application Parameters screen. Unless you have different script path after you start the application.
            Also, you mention "A4V4" directory, did you mean A4V7?
            Where is your program directory? drive and directory please?
              Hi Dave
              Fixed my problem. The APP got corrupted in someway. In desperation I unzipped a back up and overwrote the existing APP and now the problem is gone.
              Thanks very much for the time an effort you spent on helping me with this problem.
