Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    query problem

    Since installing the previous patch (not the latest one) I have problems with queries on several forms.
    One example : to select a certain investment fund from my investment table I setup a variable called active_funds. The choices on the variable field come from a lookup table.
    After selecting a fund from the lookup table, I activate a button which runs a custom query with the following filter expression :
    descriptn = Var->active_funds .and. Maingroup = "Yes"
    When the form first gets activated this works fine. When I select another fund , I get an empty table. I never had trouble with this before. ( This application is probably 5 years old).
    It looks like the second query is only looking at the previously selected data and not at the whole table.
    This problem exists also on other queries where part of the filter expression is a variable.
    I have no problems using the Query by form genie from the menue.
    I have downloaded the latest patch hoping it would solve this, but it did not!

    Hope somebody knows a way out.

    Try setting query.options="T" in your code when you set up your query.

      Peter,
      The 'Maingroup' field is a character field and I had tried your suggestion already before I posted this thread.
      I went one further and changed that field to a logical field and now I am getting "Invalid order expression" message.
      I also tried without the second part of the expression (maingroup = "yes").
      Same results.
      When the form first opens I can do 1 query, that's it.
      Still stuck...

        Gunter, how about posting a working model of the database here? We can confirm the behavior you're seeing, and maybe have an explanation or suggestion for work around. When you post the database, include instructions for us to follow to be able to retrace your steps on our machines. -- tom

          Guner,
          The other suggestion I would make is to change the query filter to
          Code:
          query.filter="descriptn = "+quote( active_funds)+\
          " .and. Maingroup = \"Yes\""
          If that doesn't work, try putting
          Code:
          table.current().query_detach_all()
          in front of the query filter.

            Gentlemen

            Thank's for your help.
            I did find a workaround on my own (placed a "set index" before the query), but peter's last suggestion - table.current().query_detach_all() - works better and I am back in buiseness.
            The question that remains though is why did this happen after 8 years (that's how old one of my app's is) .

            Thank's again

              Hi Gunter,

              The earlier versions of Alpha were more 'forgiving' so to speak. As the software evolves, it forces us to better conform to proper coding. Just a guess :)

              Good luck
