Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Color Equation based on mode

Hi, I looked for something to point me in the right direction, but couldn't find anything.

Basically, I would like to setup a color equation for each field on the form (unless there is an easier way to do this?) which changes the color of the text in it depending on the mode the form is in (i.e. enter, change, etc).

If anybody could give me a compass and send me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Thanks

    Check out <OBJECT>.MODE_GET()

      Thanks Scott.

I'm having trouble with the syntax when using it in an expression with the color equation genie. I have "parentform.mode_get() = "1" or "form1.mode_get() = "1" (for example), and it's not happy with it - doesn't seem to work when I switch to change mode.

Does anything I'm doing wrong seem to be obvious? Thanks

If you're forcing the user to push a button to begin a new record, or to change a record, the button script can change the colors for you. Might be easier to do this in one place, rather than in each separate object. I'm not sure when the object by object color expressions would get evaluated. Certainly when the form opens, but how would an object know that the form's mode has changed?

          Case

          Hi Shawn,

Take a look at CASE. A couple years back the board helped me do what you are trying to do but with names in a selected field, to make a row of a browse all be the same color.
Hopefully it will work along with what Scott has given you. I use <object>.mode_get() for other purposes and works fine.

Even though I answered your question, I tend to agree with Tom. An object property such as font color would not change unless the form was loading, refreshed/ repainted or a record was fetched. You need some sort of trigger event to set things in motion. I personally would only change a font color to indicate errors or missing data in a required field, but thats just me.

If you feel a user needs a "Visual cue" as to what mode the form is in, I would say use a calculated field or conditional object to show this opposed to changing the color of all the labels.

Thanks for the replies, they were helpful. I am working on a project that acts almost like an add-on for another piece of software we have. My "look and feel" is very similar, and I was thinking of mimicking this particular behavior for no other reason. I'll give it more consideration, but most likely doe something like scott mentioned and just give a visual clue.
