Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    'Latest Version' Startup Screen

When V7 starts, the News tab shows build 3960_3018 as the latest update, even though I have downloaded and installed build 4023_3023. I've been told that the News tab is supposed to keep us apprised of the current build, but if it isn't accurate, what purpose does it serve?

Do you have background updates enabled? Have you clicked "Check for news and updates now"?

Yes on Check for news and updates now. Don't see (can't find) the background updates enabled option. However, when I clicked Check for news and updates now, the build version did change to the correct number.

Dave, I agree with your criticism. My angle is that the A5 startup display New tab is confusing. It would help greatly if the display also showed what the current installed version of A5 is on my PC. Then I would be able to tell easily whether I need to upgrade or not.

The display needs to be changed so that it clearly shows what is the latest version of A5 being run and what is the latest version available for download.

            Brett,

Good thought - if they both worked as advertised.

I concur. I have the "check for news and updates automatically at startup" checked and it obviously doesn't work and hasn't for quite some time. I got 3018 just now. If I manually click the check now I get 3024. Not sure when I started seeing this issue.

                      Scott,

I agree with what you're saying. However, as I indicate in one of my previous posts, that box has been checked, but I have not been seeing the latest available build, which is the reason for my original post on this.

Brett had a good suggestion - that the News dialog displays both the latest build available and the current build installed. I would also add that they work as advertised.

I agree with Brett as well and thats why I suggested he post it in the wish list forum.

I was only clarifying the checkbox Lenny was talking about, nothing more.

Your right that something should work as advertised, just like our users would expect from us, however, to me, this is no big deal since I rarely open A5 this way. I usually open up one of my apps with a shortcut.

I have more important things to worry about :)

                          Dave,

My version of A5v7 does the same as you reported. The information is not correct. I manually check for updates or see that customers make comments about a new version update I do an update.

The automatic check for updates mechanism does not what it is intend to do. However, I never took the time to report it.

                            Marcel,

That's my point. With Alpha being helpful by including the current build information, I normally don't check the dowload page until I see on the messageboard that someone is talking about a newer build than I have. That kinda' puts me in a catchup position.

I certainly agree that it isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it is the very first thing that is seen when Alpha is loaded, so it should work.

In v5. it used to tell you that your version was outdated and a newer one was available. Why this was changed is beyond me. They way it is currently, even if it works, it doesn't tell you what your version is or if you need to update.

What would be wrong with something like this:

                              Your version is 1234_5678
A newer version 1237_5681 is now available
Would you like to download the newer version?

Or would that make it to easy for us?

P.S. And this was suggested some time ago.
