Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

NITPICKING: Default window for adding to a table lookup has no close button!

When I open a form, call a table lookup and from there add a new record to the lookup table, I notice that the default window has no close button, not even on the title bar. I have to close it from the Alpha Five window bar. I'm nitpicking, I know, but is it too much to expect a close button, even if it is on a default form?

Jose, I don't see that behavior here. Using latest build and Windows XP Pro I have a system menu ("X") in top right corner of the lookup window's caption (menu bar).

Do you suppress the system menu on your data entry form?
Are you use normal sized windows system fonts?
What option have you selected for display of windows? (Cascade, vertical, horizontal?)

Suggest you open AlphaSports, modify the Product_id field in the Invoice_items table lookup field rule to display as popup instead of drop down. Set option to enter and change records in the lookup source. Run the default form for the Invoice_items table, and observe the behavior of the default popup lookup window. Do you see the system menu ("x")? If so, that means there's something going on in your app that's blocking the display.

      Hello, Tom.

Your reply really got my attention. I'm not sure what's making my app behave like that. I've tried deleting the field rules and starting over, to no avail. With regard to your questions about my settings:
Did I suppress the system menu on my form? No, I don't think so. (That's found on the Form Properties, right?)

Am I using normal-sized system fonts? No. I didn't make any adjustments to the default font size.

What option did I select for the display of windows? In the Lookup field rule, the default choice for the popup window is Cascading. I didn't change that.

I would really appreciate any further comments you have.

I'm curious whether AlphaSports behaves the same way on your system?

If you have a second machine does this problem show up there, also?

          Tom,

I tried the maneuver you suggested with AlphaSports. The "X" was there, all right, unlike in my app. In my app, there are "X"'s in the parent form and the table lookup, but not in the default form for editing the lookup table.

Unfortunately, I don't have a second machine that I can try this on. I'm attaching my database so you can take a look.

In the meantime, I've decided not to post on the Wishlist forum for a long, long time. :o

          Thanks in advance!
          Jim

Also, if this helps, I am using the current build of A5V7 (just checked this morning) on a Windows 98SE system.
