Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 - qodbc - Quickbooks

I want to write or import data to Quickbooks Premier 2004, mainly Invoices and/or Sales Orders, Data, Item number and quantities.
If I buy the read-write version of qodbc, will I be able to write to quickbooks?
Will I need the SDK also? The guy from qodbc said, "Yes, that is how the qodbc works, through the SDK". He seemed vague on writing data to Quickbooks from Alpha 5.

Is this a complicated process? Is there any instructions as how to do this?

I downloaded the qodbc trial version several months ago and didn't get to spend much time with it. I downloaded again but my time has expired. I contacted support and they are giving me another 30 trial.

I purchased the Alpha 5 because I am a "non-programmer", using the program has not been to hard to learn, especially with the help from a friend and the help from this message board.
Right now I export data to Excel, format it to import to Alpha 5, would like to bypass Excel.
Importing into Quickbooks through Excel is very limited.

    Thank you,
    David

    Resources....

    David

There are instructions on the QODBC website to help with the interface.

    http://www.qodbc.com/qodbcalpha.htm

There is also the presentation that I did at the last conference.

    http://www.bookwood.com/qodbcalphaconference2005.zip

At this year's conference there will be more about how A5v7 works with QODBC to read and write to Quickbooks.

    Hope that helps......

It was a story to end the presentation.

Like any tool - (ie software), a piano is only as good as the player...

btw - with version 7 use the ADO import to read data from QB via QODBC into Alpha. Works really well....

I haven't used QODBC yet but my past experiences have taught me one thing about QuickBooks -- importing INTO QB is always difficult. The reason is that account names must be precise and "good accounting practices" must be maintained. If QB (or any other accounting package) were to let you just arbitrarily put data into a table, the balances would end up being a mess.

In accounting you can't just "put money in the bank." It has to come from somewhere - new sales, interest income, lease income, rent, something, anything. It's that anything that causes the problem - the accounting package has no idea what account name you will want to use. And (especially if you are building a generic app) you don't know what what account name your customer will want to use. Even if you tell them what to use, they may spell it wrong (been through that one a few times now).

In short, you can probably do it but you will have to be very careful about the process in order to get it right.

Unless absolutely necessary, my general recommendation is to NOT put data into QB. Instead, just print a report at the end of the month/period that shows the results from your A5 app and let the accountant (could be the A5 user) just enter the info in as a general ledger amount. If the details are already in A5 there is really no need to duplicate them in QB. In fact, duplication is usually not a good thing. This method has been supported by multiple accountants. In fact, my customer's accountant is usually my best ally if the customer wants to disagree with me. Most accountants have been through the issue of importing data to an accounting package and they know the problems. They also know how easy it is to enter a ledger amount to show, for example, total credit card sales for the month.

I have made connection to Quickbooks and imported tables and data to Alpha 5.
At the qodbc web site it shows how to import data to QBKS using SQL.
How or what do I do in Alpha 5 to import to QBKS?
I have this 30 day evaluation and I was trying to explore this before I decide to buy or not.
            Thanks,

Look at the slide in my presentation that is titled - How do I connect...

It shows how what to do via the WAS, xdialog, and using ADO.

The last link is an example from James Nickels that writes records into QB from Alpha 5.

For now, you need to write the xbasic/ADO code that does this work. In the future that will improve. But we need to deal with the present time today...
