Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sharing/Network Database

    Hello

I have a Alpha DB that I am attempting to share within a workgroup.
There are 2 computers in the back office. One is the Main computer that has the Alpha DB in a shared directory. The computer in the front office is a member of the workgroup and can access the files on the Main computer. The file is accessed no problem. But 98% of the time when they attempt to go to reports/forms it comes back with NOT responding. If you give it a couple minutes 4-5 it actually is responding and lets the user move forward.

I've turned off firewall/virus programs on both machines to see if this was interfering and making it take so long. No.

Is there something I am missing when allowing this to occur - it takes forever?
Perhaps some sort of networking/sharing file that is needed?

    A little more info -
    Main machine - Alpha 5 v2057 - 512Ram - 500GB HD - AMD Anthlon XP Wireless adapter (NETGEAR)

    Front machine - Alpha 5 v2057 - 512Ram - 500GB HD - AMD Antlon XP - 100MB network card.

100 MB NETGEAR Switch Wireless 4-port.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank-you
    George

Have you investigated the network optimize feature. Although it seems you do have network issues, network optimize places copies of layouts on the client machine so that they are not loaded from the server each time they are accessed.
    There can be only one.

Are you actually using a wireless to the main machine? At G speed that's only 54 mb max. Run a wire to it and get 100 mhz...

New machines and they don't have GB network cards?

That's an even better way to go... along with a GB router.....

Doing the shadow/optimizer will help also...

No it's a netgear wireless adapter in the computer.
        Netgear 100mb wireless switch/router, 4-port wired available.

I wish it were that simple with just running a cable to the machine. They had to go wireless based on the position/location.

I will attempt the network shadow/optimization feature and see if that helps.

        ---------------------------------

I beleive that it is a routine that I have running after a user closes a form that is causing allot of the slowdown. The issue - when a user enters a record even part way and decides to exit out - a blank record is still created. Even though I have some of the fields marked as "must contain data".. It asks do you want to continue entry YES/NO and it don't matter - a record is still created. I thought I'd circumvent by forcing a blankrecord strip at ONEXIT which worked okay.. now they are sharing the DB across the network and it is so-so very slow. When I deleted the ONEXIT script things went good - BUT YOU GOT IT - back to the blank records being created... ugh...

So I'm sure the optimazation will help - but.

        Thanx
        George

Alright is there anything further I can look at?

I shadowed to DB on the individuals computer.
I even made the IP address' on the computers in the back office static.
The computer can access the shared files on the other machine but when she attempts to bring up the DB the error occurs. It was fine all day yesterday - no body rebooted their machines and this morning she can't access it again.

Is this because the computer that the DB resides on is Wireless?
If so what am I missing because she can access the shared files on the other machine. Was I supposed to access the DB and Network optimize after the address were made static? That is the only thing I changed. Is there an ini file that I can edit and tell it to look for that computers address rather than the name "\\gerobinson" that its looking for?

          Any more suggestions?

I've gone ahead and made cable connection to the unit -
I guess I will find out tomorrow if this does the trick. Hopefully no body will trip :)
